40. John David MALTSBERGER ⁽⁴⁴⁾ was born in 1779 in PA. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ All 16 children lived to adulthood, which was rare in these days. He emigrated in 1800 from From PA to TN.. He died about 1854 in Greene Co., TN. He signed a will on 4 Sep 1854 in Greene Co., TN. pg. 79 John Maltsberger, 4 Sept 1854, $2000: sons, Phillip,and David have whole plantation. Sons, Michael, John are each to have $1. Each daughter to receive $100. Daughters: Catharine, wife of Jacob Bowman; Susanna, wife of Alexander McCollum; Sarah, wife of William Miller; Rebecca, wife of Valentine McNew; Deborah, wife of Lewis Tadlock; Martha, wife of Azariah Doty; Daughter, Rachel's children to recieve $100. John Jones, son of my daughter, Polly T., to Peter, one of daughter Polly's children, married to Frederick Petter, $5. James M. Tadlock, son of my daughter, Elizabeth, $50. Keep the old gray mare. Use money to pay debts. Executors: Sons, Philip and David Maltsberger. Will dated 9 Aug 1854. Witnesses: Charles Bright, A. W. Brabson, Natheniel Pickering. Signed by John Maltsberger.

Their is said to be a Maltsberger Hollow or Station around the Greenville, TN area. The Maltsberger and Bright may have traveled from Reading, PA to TN together. John David Maltsberger, Sr. married about 1797 in PA, to Mary Polly Bright who was born about 1781 in PA, to Michael Bright and Louisa Land Bright. according to a family Bible Their first child was Michael Maltsberger, born 15 Dec. 1797. It is believed he was born in PA, but exact birth place is unknown.

In the years 1801 and 1803, John and Mary Polly were located in Virginia, where two more children were born. By 1806 they were in Greene County, Tenn., where their third child was born. Records show that John Maltsberger and Michael Bright were administrators of the estate of one Phillip Maltsberger who died there in Oct. 1808, by drowning. It seems likely this was John's father. Mary Polly Bright descended from early immigrants who came from Schreisheim, Germany in 1726 to Germantown, Penn. A paper, "Historical Sketch of the Bright Family", published Nov. 13 1900 in Berks County, Penn., by A. G. Green, Esq., records the genealogy of the Brecht Family, as the name was originally spelled, however, it was changed to Bright by the second generation in America. Mary Polly Bright Maltsberger died about 1840 . Both died in Greene Co., Tenn.

The origin of the Maltsbergers has not been established for certain. The names of three passengers arriving in Philadelphia in 21 Sept 1751 on the ship Two Brothers were Johann Jacob Moltzberger, Johannes Moltzberger and William Moltzberger. The writing is difficult to decipher. Subsequent records show the name spelled various ways. Descendants of these named appear in Pennsylvania in the following years and the names Maltzberger, Malsberger and others, are often used and identified as the same families, but the relationship, or any direct lineage to the above John Maltsberger has not been documented. Family legend has been passed down that three brothers came first "from the old country"'.

This information obtained from various censuses; Wills---Inventoried (Index) of Greene Co., Tenn., pages 251--304, dated 26th October, 1808; family Bibles in private possession; descendants of some lines and personal family knowledge. Following are the 16 children of John David Maltsberger, Sr., and Mary Polly Bright Maltsberger, and their descendants, as complete as is known at present. The order of birth of those who have no dates may not be in correct sequence.

41. Mary Polina BRIGHT was born on 8 Aug 1781 in PA. She was living in 1806 in Greene Co., TN. She died in 1840 in Greene Co., TN. She was living 1801 to 1803 in Virginia. Children were:

20 i. Michael MALTSBERGER.
ii. Catherine MALTSBERGER was born on 26 Feb 1801 in VA. She died on 17 Mar 1879 in Wallace , Fountain Co., IN. She was buried in Old Wallace Cemetery, Wallace, Fountain Co., IN. Most of Jacob and Catherine's children died while they were young. Catherine survived all of them except possibly, John. In the 1870 Census of Fountain Co., IN, Catherine is living with son-in-law, Lewis Sowers, taking care of 2 small grandchildren. Her daughter, Martha, had died less than a year earlier. Catherine was a widow for 21 years.
iii. John David MALTSBERGER Jr. was born on 2 Aug 1803 in Boiling (Rolling?) Springs, VA.⁽⁴⁴⁾ He was born while his parents were moving from PA toward Greene Co., TN where they permanently located and raised a large family. He died on 3 May 1879 in Wallace, Fountain Co., IN. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ He owned father's plantation with brother Phillip from his father's will.. He was buried in Wallace Cem., Wallace, Fountain Co., IN. He was living in in Greene Co., TN most of his life.. He died in Fountain Co., IN, where was visiting his widowed sister, Catherine Bowman and his other siblings..
iv. Sarah (Sallie) MALTSBERGER was born in 1804 in VA. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ She died in TN.
v. Louisa MALTSBERGER was born about 1805 in Greene Co., TN. She died in 1824.
vi. Phillip MALTSBERGER was born on 14 Dec 1806 in Greene Co., TN. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ The line of Phillip Maltsberger was complied by Roger Moffit of Jerome, ID and presented to Thelma Maltsberger Hunt for her Maltsberger Bulletin. He died about 1865 in Greene Co., TN. Phillip was born, lived and raised his family in and around Greeneville, Greene Co., TN. He owned his father's plantation in will with brother David.. He was buried in Greene Co., TN.
vii. Rachel MALTSBERGER was born in 1815 in Greene Co., TN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Greene Co., TN. pg. 256, part B, schedule 1. 1 June 1850
viii. George MALTSBERGER was born in 1810 in Greene Co., TN. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ Bob Battaglia' information is different. He says George was born in 1804 and married Selina. They had six children: Jacob (born 1832), Joseph (born 1836), Mary (born 1839), Matilda (born 1841), Eli (born 1843), and Margaret (born 1849). No further information. He died in 1817. ⁽⁴⁴⁾

x. Abigail MALTSBERGER was born in 1813 in Greene Co., TN. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ She died on 10 Jan 1873.⁽⁴⁴⁾
xi. Elizabeth "Betsy" MALTSBERGER was born about 1830 in Greene Co., TN.
xii. Susannah MALTSBERGER was born on 5 Nov 1818 in Greene Co., TN. ⁽⁴⁴⁾ She died on 8 Jan 1905 in Bethany, MO. ⁽⁴⁴⁾
