20. Michael MALTSBERGER (44) was born on 15 Dec 1797 in PA. (44) A family Bible lists all the names and birthdates of the family. Information given by Irene Wuljen to Thelma Hunt. He was a Justice of the Peace and Court President in 1845 in Gentry Co, MO. Lived in Gentry Co. until 1855. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Athens Township, Gentry Co., MO. Michael, Sarah, Phillip, George, Alexander, Isabella, Aaron, Mary C., Michael, David Jonathon are listed with their ages. The 3 oldest boys are listed as farmers like Dad. The census was taken Oct 1, 1850. Michael's birthplace is incorrectly listed as Gm. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Denton Co., TX. He died in Dec 1898 in Denton Co., TX. (44) Michael Maltsberger, first child in the proceeding list, born 15 Dec. 1797 in Penn., died about 1898. It is believed he lived to the age of 100 or more. He died in San Antonio, Texas. He married 18 Dec. 1822 to (1) Nancy Newman who was born 18 April. 1800 in Tenn., departed this life 9 Dec. 1846 in or near Albany, Gentry Co., MO. She was the daughter of Aaron Newman born 29 Mar. 1772 in Va., and Catherine Blair. Michael and Nancy had 10 children born in Greene Co., Tenn. There was a settlement named Maltsberger in that time. There was an apple called the Maltsberger apple as it had been grown from plants imported by that family. The Post Office was known as Maltsberger. The name of the town was changed to Chucky City in later years after Maltsbergers had moved to other parts. There are descendants residing in Greeneville and Greene Co., Tenn.

Michael was a frontiersman. As new areas opened up, he moved on. He pioneered in Missouri and Texas, going first with his family to Gentry Co., Mo. He was there in 1845 when he was appointed to be one of the Justices of the Court by commission from the Governor, under seal of the state, and took office. The court "proceeded to elect Michael Maltsberger, Esq as president of said court". He lived there until 1855. His wife, Nancy Newman Maltsberger's death there in 1846 left him with several small children. He then married (2) Sarah Jane Newman, sister to Nancy, who was born 8 Oct. 1808 in Tenn., died about 1880 in or near San Antonio, Texas. They had 1 son, Jonathon Blair Milton Maltsberger, (to be listed in proper sequence below).

After living in Gentry Co., MO., for about 10 years, Michael and Sarah Jane and younger members of this family migrated on to Denton Co., Texas. They appear in the 1860 Census there. Some years later they removed to San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, where Michael resided the rest of his life, as far as is known. Four of his sons, Phillip, George Washington, Alexander and Aaron, also located there (exact time unknown). His two daughters were in Denton, Tex., in 1860, (unable to trace further). Many Maltsberger descendants still reside in the San Antonia area, as well as OK, CA, IN, and other states. Sarah Jane preceded Michael in death.
He was married to Nancy NEWMAN on 18 Dec 1822. (44)

21. Nancy NEWMAN was born on 18 Apr 1800 in TN.(44) She died on 9 Dec 1846 in Albany, Gentry Co., MO. (44) She was living by 1845 in Gentry Co, MO. She was living until early 1840's in Greene Co., TN. Children were:

child i. John MALTSBERGER was born on 12 Sep 1823 in Greene Co., TN. (44) He died on 23 Apr 1843 in Greene Co., TN. (44) He died from an accidental ax wound while chopping wood by bleeding to death. He was interred the next day. He was buried in Union Temple Cem., near Greenville, TN.
child ii. Jacob MALTSBERGER(44) was born on 29 Mar 1826 in Greene Co., TN.(44) He appeared on the census in 1870 in Greene Co., TN. The entire family in this census. Taken from 1870 Census of Greene Co., Tenn.
child iii. Phillip MALTSBERGER(44) was born on 2 Apr 1828 in Greene Co., TN.(44) He died in 1905 in Pawnee, Pawnee Co., OK.(44) (44) He was buried in Lela, Okla. (44) He was described as Phillip was kind, gentle man with a beard.. Phillip is reported to have worked for a railroad and taught school. He and his family lived in San Antonio, Texas, for many years. Some of his family lived in Pawnee, OK, and Platte Co., MO.

child v. Alexander MALTSBERGER was born on 25 Mar 1832 in Greene Co., TN. He resided at his son's home 2 miles north of Utopia in 1916. He died on 16 Aug 1916 in Bandera, TX. He served in the military 1860's in Union Army. He served as a private, Co. M, 16th Regiment Kansas Cavalry, and a 2nd Lieutenant, Co. C, 39th Regiment, Missouri State Militia. He was buried in Jones Cemetery near Utopia, Uvalda, TX. He was described as tall, slender with a short grey beard. He could tell many stories of pioneer life with its narrow escapes from prairie fires and wild animals. He was a Ranchman in South Texas. Alex Maltsberger, Brand ALX, was a cowboy who came to the Panhandle in 1880 as trail driver for Schreiner, Light and Lytle, one of the largest trail outfits in South Texas. He worked for the Box T in Lipscomb County and was elected the first sheriff of that county.
In later years, he became a ranchman in the Cherokee Strip. His ranch was located on the John Chisolm Trail near where it crosses the Cimarron River. He was well known over the area. His fast friends were Sebe Jones, Alex Crawford, Charles Schreiner, Sam Capp, John McQuigg, and Charles Rynearson.
Once while rounding up cattle in South Texas, Sebe Jones, and Alex shot it out with and captured a group of horse thieves. They were taking them to county seat at Kerrville, when a group of vigilantes took the prisoners from them and hanged them on a pecan tree on Turtle Creek.
child vi. Isabell Ann MALTSBERGER was born on 2 Apr 1834 in Greene Co., TN. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Denton, Denton Co.,TX. No other information. Family tradition says some of the family were "Sooners" in OK.
child vii. Aaron MALTSBERGER was born on 21 Mar 1836 in Greene Co., TN. He died on 2 Jun 1899 in San Antonio , Bexar Co., TX,. He was buried in Coker Cemetery, Bexar Co., TX.
child viii. Mary Catherine MALTSBERGER was born on 15 Feb 1838 in Greene Co., TN. She appeared on the census on 1 Oct 1850 in Gentry Co, MO. Athens Township (page 431), with Michael Maltsberger family. She was living after 1860 in OK, and then possibly in or near Austin, TX when Michael moved to San Antonio, TX. She appeared on the census on 26 Jun 1860 in Denton Co., TX. Lewisville (page 62). Listed with her father, Michael, stepmother, and half-brother.
child ix. Michael Bright MALTSBERGER was born on 15 Feb 1840. He died Civil War in 1861-65. Michael and his brother, David are said tp have been ambushed by Union Soldiers and made to dig their own graves.
child x. David MALTSBERGER was born on 2 Apr 1842. He died Civil War. Family legend says that Michael Bright and David were killed in the Civil War. They were made to dig their own graves. Probably in Missouri as they do not appear in Texas in 1860 with Michael, Sr.
