Nowhere But Drowned

Running through the water gets you nowhere but drowned
As you chase foamy waves into the sunset.
Gulls soar above and glide on your breath
Watching you plod through the sea.

Water evades, you clasp and it slips through your fingers
While gathering at your waist.
The fish near your toes slip in and around
And glide on the currents you make.

The red of the sky and the blue of the churning wild water
Fill your mind as wet salt gathers in your mouth.
You end in a paralyzed stance able only to look at what you wanted.
You make no movement; your mouth makes no breath.

Running through the water gets you nowhere but drowned
As you fail to catch the waves you are chasing.
Your breath is no more and the gulls depart with nothing left to glide upon.
And as you sink to the sand bottom, the fish are swimming away.
