MADD...How Many?

Just the other night,
my daughter was driving home,
she came to an intersection,
but something was very wrong.

She could see their lights flashing,
the firemen in the road,
their flashlights directing traffic,
waving on vehicles ,no heed to the cold.

She had no way of knowing,
the sadness just beyond,
just the shock and horror
of two vehicles that had hit "head-on".

I thank God and those firefighters,
she could not see the crumpled, broken mess,
the total destruction that lay beyond the
protective barrier of their engines "nest".

I listened to her tell me,
the curiosity and innocent excitement in her eyes,
of the brilliant lights,
the road flares,
that lit up the ebony sky.

How could I tell her,
that even as she had passed by,
an innocent victim had died?
That all those brave firefighters
had given it their all,
yet only to lose another one,
all because of alcohol.

Will my daughter ever realize
that as she drove by...
those very same strong and fearless
firefighters, had both anger and tears
in their eyes?

She could not see the jaws of life,
nor the firefighters working in strife.
Nor did she know a young lady her age
had just lost her life.

A "repeat offender", it was said,
of the man arrested and convicted
of yet another OUI...
How do I tell her our system failed,
and the real tragedy is, another person had died?

That now a young lady of 18 years
would never see her prom,
or go home and say once again, "I love you, mom"...

How many will it take
before we correct the wrong?
How many will go through the trauma units,
before we become strong?

How will I tell my daughter,
as she will ask me, I know,
why someone is allowed behind the wheel...
to drink...
to drive...
to kill?

How many more firefighters
will be bearing the scars for life?
They come upon the scene,
how can they not think
"My God, what if this had been my kids,
my family...
my wife?"

The senseless tragedy,
the pain and the loss...
My God, how many more
will be at their mercy...
their will?

All because someone has the
nerve to get behind the wheel...
to drink...
to drive...
to kill?
