Last Wish

He was just a little boy of six
full of hope and dreams so rich.
He never cared for fancy toys and such,
his greatest dream was to ride in a firetruck.

He reminded his mom every chance he could,
"please Mom, make Daddy's promise come true."
He knew her tears were for his Dad.
They had lost him last fall to a fire
that had been real bad.

He remembered the long line of trucks
all draped in black,
the sadness and tears on his Mommy's face,
all the men who had once patted his back,
telling him he'd be a brave fireman,
just like his Dad.

For a boy of six, he was wise for his years.
He knew the day he left the doctor's office,
with his Mom in tears,
he'd be joining his Daddy
before too long, and he had to remember
to be strong.

He tried his best to smile for the nurses,
even when the pain was more than he could stand,
for his Daddy's last words to him were
"Son, you are my little big man."

As the days grew on and the boy became weak,
his Mom was told the moment was at hand.
With tears held back and smiles forced past the pain,
she kissed her boy's cheek and her vigil began.

The boy's hospital room was filled with balloons
and stuffed animals, flowers and toys,
but it seemed nothing could now bring a hint of joy.

Then one by one, they started to come,
comrades of his Dad's, more brothers than friends,
to be there for the boy in his final days.

He had written a note in his uneven print,
to be given to his Mom if he could no longer speak.
The nurse brought it in to his mother one day,
tears in her eyes and an unspoken sadness she displayed.

With shaky fingers, his Mom opened the note,
tears fell freely when she read what her
only child had weeks before wrote.

There was not a dry eye on the unit that day,
as the men, all in full dress uniform
from Station 18, came to honor the request
of a dying boy's last wish.

The sun was bright, the engine shinning.
The little boy for a few brief moments,
was smiling...
He had received his wish, his dream come true...
He died in the arms of a hero...
His last wish fulfilled.

This is a true story, out of respect to the family,
no names were mentioned, nor their location.
God Bless you all from Station 18,
for making a little boy's last few moments
the best they could be.
The child was on a waiting list for a liver,
sadly, it was too late.
Please support the Organ Donor Program in your area...
it could save someone's life.

God Bless you all and may you stay safe.
