WHY THIS WEBSITE EXISTS: To share and stimulate thought and insight on life issues
Quotes: One's past is what one is. It is the only way by which people should be judged. -- Oscar Wilde The past is history; the future is a mystery; this moment is a gift; that is why this moment is called the present; enjoy it. -- Allan Johnson Where there is no hope in the future, there is no power in the present. -- John Maxwell The purpose of quotes on this website is to provoke thought and may or may not be an endorsement of the person being quoted and his or her beliefs.
Question of the month: What time frame in life (past, present, future) is the biggest factor in how you live your life? a) Past - I realize that my desires and decisions are heavily influenced and shaped by me dwelling on my past experiences, whether positive or negative. b) Present - I realize that my desires and decisions are largely tied to dealing and reacting to current situations going in my life now, with little focus on the past or any sustained future outlook. c) Future - I realize that my desires and decisions are primarily characterized by hoping and working for a better situation to happen to me someday.

How are you doing? Did you enjoy your summer (and did it go by quickly for you)? The topic for September is asking whether we are living in the past, present or future, specifically what time frame influences the desires and decisions in our lives. I'm wondering how much our lives are motivated by the degree that we dwell on the past, focus on dealing in the present, or plan and worry about the future. Lik-See, 09-19-05 To elaborate: People who live in the past are those who constantly reminisce about how much more enjoyable and carefree things were in the yester-years, and yearns for their lives to match what once was...or it could also mean people who have a hard time letting go of tragic or difficult situations they experienced, and the subsequent pain and trauma they went through because of it. Example: a person perceives being socially isolated a comfortable and safe environment to be in, remembering far too well the past experience of being laughed and yelled at by close family members and friends...so it's just easier (and a lot less fearful) to avoid dealing with people as much as possible. People who live in the present are those who primarily deal with day-to-day responsibilities and events, focusing on taking care of the need at hand. These are people who don't focus on dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Their motivation tends to be getting through life as it currently stands now, with a one-step-at-a-time attitude. Their happiness is based on how well things are for them now - not before or someday, but now. People who live in the future are those who constantly dream and believe - or want to believe - that their life will improve in some way down the line, and make plans with that hope. What keeps them going in life is that some day, they'll be in a better spot than they are now...or the opposite, they believe that there is no hope: they feel demoralized and unenthusiastic about life, thinking and feeling whatever they do will just amount to nothing.
How true or false do you think the following statements are in your life? 1) One of the worst things that can come out of dwelling on the past is fear. 2) One of the worst things that can come out of focusing on the present is short-sightedness in how you go about your life, and inevitably accomplishing very little which has long-term benefit or impact. 3) One of the worst things that can come out of planning and worrying about the future is that it takes away your ability to enjoy the present and appreciate past experiences. 4) There are good things that come from focusing on the past, present and future, in terms of shaping what you desire and pursue in life. Accounting for all of those are important as long as you have the right perspective. 5) I feel I have so little control with what has happened to my life, what is happening and what will happen.
