To be laughed at by others is one of life's great hurts. -- Frank Tyger A person who can bring the spirit of laughter into a room is indeed blessed. -- Bennett Cerf It seems that laughter needs an echo. -- Henri Bergson The purpose of quotes on this website is to provoke thought and may or may not be an endorsement of the person being quoted and his or her beliefs. |

| The topic this month is about why we laugh, namely thoughts on what motivates us to laugh and what it may reveal about who we are in relation to others. Lik-See, 10-21-05 With laughing being so basic and commonplace to our human makeup, it can often appear to be mainly an involuntary response to humorous situations in our daily lives. However, at a deeper level, I'm wondering if why and when we laugh says something about our life - our desires, values and even fears - particularly among people. With consideration to the inexhaustible dimensions and dynamics of what motivates us to laugh, here are a few thoughts: Do we find ourselves laughing with people? Maybe, it's speaking of our desire to find and share something in common with people, especially those we're trying to get to know, believing that the best type of enjoyment is relating to those who have similar perceptions or go through the same situations and challenges in life. Do we find ourselves laughing at people? Maybe, it's speaking of our tendency and desire to think highly of ourselves at the expense of pushing others down. Maybe - in our joking conversations about others - our motivation is to feel better about ourselves by focusing on other's weaknesses and flaws (instead of our own), or at least our perception of them. Do we find ourselves laughing at ourselves? Maybe it's speaking of us having to acknowledge our weakness and limitation as a person, especially when we fumble at things being attempted - however small or big...maybe it is also communicating to people (particularly when find ourselves in an embarassing situation): "Hey, you saw me for who I am, there's no hiding it; please don't hold it against me". I'll share more thoughts about laughter next month, especially as it relates to how we use it as a coping mechanism in dealing with difficulty and pain. |
| What is the dynamic involved with why we laugh in relation to others? What does the degree to which we laugh says about what we think about certain people or want from certain people? How true or untrue are the following statements to you? -I tend to laugh with those I feel most close with since I see laughing as an close-knit expression of sharing something in common with a good friend. -I tend to laugh with those I don't know that well since I see laughing as a way of breaking the ice with people and making people feel comfortable around me. -I tend to laugh (joke around) with almost anyone as a way of diverting people from observing me too closely and discovering my flaws and weaknesses. -I tend not to laugh around people since I view laughing as something superficial and doing very little substantively to help me relate to others in a meaningful way. |
