General Note: just to let you know, I update this website with a new topic around the beginning of each month.
Thank you for checking my website this month.  I hope you are looking forward to the summer ahead. The topic for May is the transient nature of life, specifically observations and thoughts on how many experiences and situations and interests in life don't seem to stay permanent over the course of our lives.  Lik-See, 05/10/05

As you reflect back on your life:

You may remember fondly back to the fun-filled (maybe not everyone) days of your childhood, consisting of endless play time outdoors at the jungle gym, hour after hour of fixing yourself in front of your favorite Saturday morning cartoons, laughing and playing tag with friends.  But now that memory seems so distant and unreal, so out of touch with your current problem- and challenge-filled reality of life - a far cry from the innocent and carefree days that defined your first 10 or so years of life.

You may remember the close-knit circle of friends you have, maybe during your high school or college or early-career years, how easy-going and fun and comforting it was to be with friends who you can freely express your thoughts to and who actually enjoyed your company and no one worried about talking until the late hours of the night or early hours of the morning.  But now, with everyone's busy schedule and maybe more importantly different priorities and direction in life, you find the opportunity to connect with peers on a consistent basis harder to come by.

Or you think back to your days of being single and remember how much more in love you 'felt' with the person that would become your husband or wife.  But now, familarity and the high maintenance of family life - and that the fact that you see each other's weaknesses more than before - give way to the excitement and euphoria that once fueled your relationship.
Continued on other side...

Continued:
Or you vividly recall the pursuits and interests and worries that seemed so dominant at a certain stage in your life whether it was the pressure to get good grades in school, impress a person you were attracted to, pursue your dream job, cope with a gut-wrenching tragedy. Although hard to imagine while in the midst of it, the intensity of those desires and situations often come and go.  You either complete that phase of your life (although consequences can still linger) or just lose interest - or hope in believing that aspect of your life is so crucial to your happiness.

Do you find it illuminating or discomforting that many things - people and situations and desires and basically who we are - seem to be so transient throughout the course of our lives?  That no matter what we do, it may be pretty difficult to hold onto to something being the same as you once remembered it.   Is there a real and deep desire (?) for constancy and permanence in our lives?  Why or why not?

Maybe if we believe that inherent desire (universal?) exists, it speaks to our want or need of constant assurance that the greatest enjoyments we can experience will always be there at some level...just some guarantee that we can hold on to something for security and safety and our ultimate well-being, and trust that it won't diminish as we go through life.
