Basic Information on the Seven Major Chakras
There are seven commonly known major chakras (also known as energy centers) in the human body, although with the possible inclusion of the thymus center (situated halfway between the throat chakra and the heart chakra), they may number eight. The thymus chakra seems to be questionable as to whether it is a major or minor chakra - however, it is certainly important! The major chakras are also known as 'wheels of life' for they are responsible for the energy which flows through and around our physical body and into the aura or outer energy field. Each chakra or energy center, is connected to a section of the body as well as with each other. Therefore if one chakra is not functioning properly, then the other chakras will most likely be thrown out of alignment as well. Each chakra has a specific colour and spins either clockwise or anticlockwise depending on the chakra and the gender. The major chakras are found in a central line running down the middle of the body and may be accessed from either front or back. They are usually seen as circular or cylindrical in shape, although in Indian tradition they are seen as lotus shaped.

BASE CHAKRA This is also called the Root chakra and is located in the bottom of the trunk of the body. Pictures of this chakra will often show the chakra pointing downwards between the legs, however, if you are working on this chakra for healing you would place your hands just above the pubic bone so as not to be offensive. The colour associated with this chakra is red and in women it spins anticlockwise, and clockwise for men. This chakra is responsible for the flow on energy to the lower part of the body such as lower back, sciatic nerve, legs, knees, ankles, feet etc.....some include the reproductive organs in the scope of this chakra, while others list them as connected to the sacral chakra. I beleive we can work on those areas through both these two bottom chakras. It also deals with your basic energy for everyday living so if you are feeling tired or rundown, you may need to work with this energy center. If the base chakra is not functioning properly, you may also find problems with depression or a feeling of powerlessness. SACRAL CHAKRA This is located just under or around the belly button and the colour associated with this energy center is a vibrant orange. In women, it spins clockwise and in men, clockwise. In a healing, we would place our hands on either side of its position, or one hand directly over the top and the other hand closeby. This chakra governs related parts of the body such as the lower intestinal tract, parts of the bowel and reproductive organs. It is linked to our passions - both sexually and the passion we have for our life. It is enormously important to our sense of self and our self image as well as our creativity. If a person has suffered any kind of abuse - whether it is physical, emotional or mental, this chakra will be involved (as well as others). SOLAR CHAKRA This is located just under the breats bone below the ribs and the colour of this chakra is a vivid yellow. In women it rotates in an anticlockwise direction and the reverse for men. This chakra deals with our will power, our inner strengths and convictions, and perseverance. It is where we store our experiences whether they be happy or hurtful. It deals with the stomach area, the gall bladder, liver and kidneys. In a healing, if you are working directly on this chakra and elicit a healing response, you may find that your client is feeling uncomfortable and their breathing becomes laboured. In this case, ask them to take deep breathes and release the cause of their discomfort.
