Final Fantasy VIII-Guardian Forces
Guardian Forces are the most important aspect for a winning team. Each character is basically useless without one and cannot even use the item command. With GF, commands can be set, magic can be junctioned and that GF can be summoned. There are sixteen recruitable GF in Final Fantasy VIII.

Quezacotl
Final Fantasy VIII's lightning GF. Based on the legendary thunder bird of legend. Quetzalcoatlus was also the name of a large pterosaur. To get Quezacotl to join you, simply activate the game's tutorial from Squall's study panel at Balamb Garden. Quezacotl's attack, Thunder Storm is a moderately strong lightning attack against all enemies.

Shiva
Final Fantasy's Ice GF since it's earlier days. Based on the Hindu deity Shiva. To receive Shiva, activate the game's tutorial from Squall's study panel at Balamb Garden. Shiva's attack, Diamond Dust, is a moderately strong ice elemental attack against all enemies.

Ifrit
Ifrit has been Final Fantasy's Fire GF for some time now and has gone through many appearance changes. An Ifrit is a fire djinni from the plane of fire. In Final Fantasy VIII, Ifrit is the only compulsory GF to recruit. He will join after you defeat him in the Fire Cave. Ifrit's attack, Hell Fire is a moderately strong fire attack against all enemies.

Siren
Siren is one of the traditional GFs. She is based on the bird-women who would lure sailors to the doom with their voices in the Oddysey. To get Siren, you must draw her from Elvoret at the communication tower. Siren's attack, silent voice will attack all enemies and attempt to cast silence on them.

The Brothers, Sacred and Minotaur
The Brothers are a GF introduced in Final Fantasy VIII. They are a pair of minotaurs who guard a tomb near Deling City. They elder of the two is a shrimp while the younger is normal sized, but a lot wimpier. To get them to join you, you must fight Sacred in the tomb of the unknown king, then defeat them both together. Their attack, Brotherly Love is a moderately strengthed earth elemental attack against all enemies.

Diablos
Diablos is a new GF introduced in Final Fantasy VIII. He is based on the devil. To recruit him, you must use the lamp that Headmaster Cid gives to you once you leave for your first mission as a SeeD. You will have to fight Diablos, which is not easy. Once you have defeated him, he will give in and join you. His Dark Messenger attack plunges a ball of black magic on enemies to reduce their HP depending on their current amount.

Carbuncle
Carbuncle is a GF that I believe was introduced in Final Fantasy V. It is named after the red coloured stone on its forehead. To receive it as a GF, you must draw Carbuncle from either of the two Iguioins during their battle with Squall and Irvine. Carbuncle's skill, Ruby Light will cast reflect on your party.

Leviathan
One of your old school water GFs, but not as powerful as he used to be. Leviathan is the name given to large monsters of the deep sea. To get Leviathan, you must draw him from NORG during your battle with him. Leviathan's attack, Tsunami, is a strong water attack against all enemies.

Pandemona
Final Fantasy VIII is Pandemona's debut as a GF. He is a wind elemental. Pandemona obviously comes from the word pandemonium, which is what seems to occur when he uses his attack. Pandemona must be drawn from Fujin during the battle in Balamb Hotel. His attack Tornado Zone will attack all enemies for strong wind damage.

Cerberus
Cerberus makes his first appearance as a GF in Final Fantasy VIII. Cerberus is the three headed dog that guards the gate to hell in mythology. To get Cerberus to join you, you must fight him in Galbadia Garden during the Garden War. His skill, Counter Rockets will cast double and triple on all allies.

Alexander
Alexander returns as one of the most mysterious GF. I'm not sure what Alexander is all about. To get Alexander on your side, you must draw him from Edea at the end of disc 2. His attack, Holy Judgement will attack all enemies for strong holy damage.

DoomTrain
The doomtrain from Final Fantasy VI returns, this time as a GF. To get Doomtrain to join you, you need 6 Malboro Tentacles, 6 Steel Pipes, 6 Remedy + and Solomon's Ring from Tears' point. Once you have these, use the Solomon Ring and Doomtrain will join you. His attack, Runaway Train attacks all enemies and inflicts all possible status ailments upon the,.

Bahamut
No stranger to Final Fantasy. Bahamut is named after the fabled king of the monsters. To get him to join you, you must head to the uncharted island at the southwestern corner of the map. On this island, Battleship Island, you will encounter Bahamut. Defeat him and he will join you. Bahamut's Mega Flare attack will blast all enemies with non elemental damage.

Cactuar
Cactuar has appeared in the previous two Final Fantasies. To receive Cactuar as a GF, you must head to a small, desertous island called Cactuar Island. Here you must fight the Jumbo Cactuar. Once you defeat Jumbo Cactuar, you can summon Cactuar. Cactuar's attack, 1,000 Needles will do more damage depending on what level Cactuar is at.

Tonberry
Tonberry has appeared before as an enemy, but now you can recruit him. You must head to the ruins in Centra and defeat approximately twenty Tonberrys. The King Toberry will come and when you defeat him, he will join you. Tonberry's attack, Chef's Knife is a non-elemental attack to one enemy.

Eden
Making it's debut as the most powerful GF in FF8. To recruit Eden, you must head lower into Battleship Island where you can fight Ultima Weapon. You must draw Eden from Ultima Weapon. His attack, Eternal Breath is a very powerful attack to all enemies.

Odin
Odin, king of the Norse Gods. To recruit him, you must head to the Centra Ruins and unlock the gate to him within the time limit. Once you get to him you must defeat him. Odin will appear randomly at the beginning of battles to slice apart enemies with his Zantetsuken.

Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh is a bungling enemy from Final Fantasy V. He takes Odin's place later in the game. He will appear randomly during battles with one of four attacks. Zantetsuken, Masamune, Excalibur and Excalipoor.

Boko
Boko will appear and do an attack called Choco Fire is you use Gysahl Greens during battle. He will learn more attacks if you have a Pocketstation.
