In
1844, a young Persian visionary named Siyyid ŽAli Muhammad took the
title Žthe BabŽ, meaning Žthe GateŽ, and announced the imminent
appearance of a massager from God, who would the most recent of a long line
which included Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus Christ and Muhammad.
The Bab was persecuted by dominant Muslim leaders of the time and eventually
executed for his teaching, bad his massage has spread widely, his followers,
too, were masacred or exiled.
Mirza Hussayn-ŽAli was one of those followers to be inprisoned and
tortured. During four mount chained in the notorious ŽBlack PitŽ dungeon
in Tehran, he experienced a revelation that he was prophet foretold by the
Bab.
Exiled to Bagdad, he announced his mission in CE 1863.
His followers knew him as BahaŽuŽllah, the ŽGlory of GodŽ.
From Bagdad, BahaŽuŽlla,h was summoned to Constantinopel. He was the
furtherexiled to Adrianople and, in 1868, to Acre, he wrote a series of
letters to world rulers, exhorting them to reconcile their differences and
instread devote the energies to establising world peace.
While under house arrest in Arce, BahaŽuŽllah revealed
the key work of his faith, the Kitab-i Agdas, ŽThe Most Holy BookŽ.
He remaind (officially) a prisoner until his death in 1892, althought he was
allowed to live outsade Acre during the last years of his life.
