History
Recognizing the need for a bilingual, international school in Panajachel, L.I.F.E School (Lake Atitlan International Facility for Education) was established in September 1989 by a handful of parents and educators as an alternative to home schooling. The school was established and continues to be run as a parent association under the leadership of a parent board and the principal. Initially starting with just a few students, it rapidly grew over the years both due to increased international immigration as well as increased amounts of scholarships being offered to the local community. Currently 44% of LIFE students receive some form of financial assistance.

Enrollment peaked during the 2003/2004 school year with 70 students from 16 different countries. Recent competition from two new for-profit schools have lowered the enrollment. However, LIFE School is confident that by continuously providing the best quality education; staying abreast with the latest research in education and community development; staying true to its multicultural philosophy; and retaining staff who has close links to the local community it will grow steadily and remain successful.

LIFE School is the only English-speaking non-profit school in Guatemala! It continues to be the only school who provides such unprecedented access to a top-quality, international education to Mayan indigenous children and international students alike.
Curriculum & Instruction
The school follows a standard global curriculum with a focus on multicultural understanding.

The maximum class size is kept low at 15 to ensure that students are able to work to their fullest potential while receiving individualized attention. Teachers provide thematic instruction while differentiating content based on language level and background knowledge as well as abilities in multiple intelligences. Electives include library, music, arts & crafts, buddy reading, computer skills, and swimming.

All major subjects are taught in
English by certified native speakers with the exception of Spanish, which is a compulsory subject at all levels.

As an independent, nonprofit, non-sectarian learning facility, L.I.F.E. School serves not only its students but the community in general. In order to maximize cultural integration, the school observes Guatemalan holidays and participates in community events.
