NEW YORK CITY, NY – KIRSTIN’S LOFT – JAN. 18TH, 2002 – Friday

Kirstin woke up to the sound of a phone ringing. She looked at her watch and it was 6 am.

“What the hell?” she asked as she got the phone “Hello?” she answered in a sleepy voice.

“Thank God!!! Where have you been?” a worried voice asked from the other side of the phone.

“Oh, hey, Ash. What do you mean?” Kirstin frowned.

“I called you last night about a hundred times and no one answered. And then I tried your cell phone and it was off. I could barely sleep, that’s why I’m calling you so early. What happened?”

“Nothing.” Kirstin seriously didn’t know what happened.

“What do you mean nothing? Why didn’t you answer your phone?” Ashley asked angry.

“You don’t have to get angry at me! I didn’t answer because I didn’t hear it, alright? It was not my fault. It was not like I chose not to answer it. I was sleeping and I must have been pretty tired because I never heard it.” Kirstin answered also in an angry tone.

“Ok, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were that tired. Really, sorry.”

     “Yeah.” Kirstin was still angry.

“K, I didn’t mean to sound rude or anything.”

     “But you did.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t mean to. Sorry.”

“Ok.” Kirstin decided to let that go.

“So, how was your day yesterday?”

     “Terrible.”

     “Why?”

“Well, because I realized I have no one here in town to talk to. I had Tom always here with me, but that’s not coming back. And then Grace is away with her new boyfriend and you left as well, so I was left alone. I didn’t know where to go, didn’t know who to talk to. And I was afraid to come home last night and find Tom at my door. I had no one with me.”

“Was he? Was he at your door? Because if he was…”

“No, Ashley, he wasn’t.” Kirstin answered mad “Was that the only part you paid attention too? Because that was the least important thing I said. I have no one with me, Ashley!”

“I know, K. I listened.” Ashley didn’t know what to do. Kirstin was mad and he couldn’t figure out why.

     “Yeah, right.”

“K, listen, I didn’t call to argue with you. I called to see if you were fine. I’m sorry if you got the blues last night. It wasn’t a happy night for me either. I didn’t wanna be apart from you. But that’s something we have to deal with. And I don’t care because I know that when we get together again, this time we spent apart won’t matter. I love you and I’ll make it up to you.”

“You promise?” Kirstin was softening up a little.

“Of course, baby! When I go to New York, we’ll spend the whole day together. Don’t worry.”

“And do you know when that will be?”

“Not a clue yet. But it won’t take too long. We have the studio rented only until Sunday. After we do the studio thing, I don’t know what we’ll do next, so, maybe I’ll be there on Sunday night!”

“But Sunday is so far away!” Kirstin did a baby voice.

“I know, baby, but that’s it.” Ashley sounded disappointed. He couldn’t do anything to change that fact.

     “Well, yeah, I guess…”

“Listen, don’t feel blue. When is Grace coming?”

     “Tonight.”

“See? That’s great! You won’t be alone anymore!”

     “Yeah…”

     “Promise me something?”

     “Yes…”

“That you’ll have fun with Grace tonight?”

“Well, hard to do. She’ll want to know everything about what happened these days.”

“Oh, I see…” Ashley sounded upset “Well, after you tell her, try not to think about it anymore, alright? Don’t want you crying over what happened with that jerk!”

     “I’ll try.”

“Good. Then I have to go now. You try to get some sleep before going to college, alright?”

     “Ok, dad!” Kirstin joked.

“Oh, we’re making jokes now, aren’t we?” Ashley chuckled “Good. Glad you’re feeling a bit better.”

     “Yeah, I guess I am.”

“Great! Now, go to sleep. And I’ll call you as soon as I get the chance, alright?”

     “Ok.”

“You can call me too, you know?”

“I know, but you’re the rich one! You pay for the long distance calls.” Kirstin grinned.

     “Oh, clever!” Ashley laughed.

“Then, go. We’ll talk later.” Kirstin said.

     “Ok. I love you.”

     “I love you, too. Bye.”

     “Bye.”

Kirstin smiled as she put the phone down. Ashley loved and cared about her. She lay down on the couch. Everything would be fine.
