Of Mice and Men 2

Lesson: Acting it Out (good to do after Voices in the Head lesson)
Unit: Of Mice and Men, chapter 6
Length: fifty minutes
Space Requirements: large open area in classroom for performance
Age Level: 9th grade
Materials: copies of Of Mice and Men
Overview: Students will work in groups of three to do a readers theater performance of chapter 6 in Of Mice and Men. They will work on giving an accurate portrayal of the characters.
Objectives:
· Students will do a readers theater performance of chapter 6
· Students will study the characters and accurately portray them
· Students will gain a better understanding of others that are different from themselves.
· Students will improve their communication skills
· Students will practice critiquing each other and constructive criticism.
Plan:
· 15 minutes: Split class in to groups of three. Each group should then read chapter six together and decide who is going to be Lenny, George, and the narrator. They must then work together to plan out how they will act out the scene in an interesting way that portrays the characters accurately.
· 35 minutes: performances- each group will perform. Discuss what they did well, and how they gave us more understanding of the characters and the situation.
Accommodation: Every student should be able to participate in this activity. The
activity is easily altered to fit any need.
Assessment: Students will receive 30 points for their performance. The performance will be graded on clarity (5), creativity (10), accuracy (5), and overall quality (10).
