CIS 625 Journal Summaries- Article 1-3
Article 1: Via video, Canadian surgeon operates in France
 Original source
This
news is about the first transatlantic operation, Canadian and French surgeons
working in New York used a remote-controlled robot to remove the gall bladder of
a 68-year-old woman in France.
The success of the cross-oceanic operation suggests doctors will be able to
operate on patients in isolated, medically under serviced areas, battlefronts,
Third World countries, or even outer space -- without actually being there. I do
think the long distance robotic surgery technology may widely use in
battlefronts and third World countries.
Moreover, more and more long-distance
care or treatment projects are implemented all over the world. One long distance
treatment project
named Telenursing brings treatment to patients in their homes via video
just as the operation in this news. Recently, European
Space Agency is also using satellites
to help doctors sent specialist medical treatment to remote Canada. Furthermore,
many hospitals and health organizations use the web to open On-Line
Consultation For Long Distance Treatment.
Article 2: IBM
Intranet Unites Workers, Boosts Morale
 Original
source
Summary:
We had discussed the Intranet and e-commerce in the
discussion board. And IBM is one of the world's biggest E-commerce players. This
news is talking about IBM is hoping to use online tools to bolster employee
morale and communication.
Its recent added host of intranet tools let employees communicate with one
another more easily and work collaboratively online.
Beyond employee-to-employee collaboration, IBM is building out its intranet to
provide information on all key facets of work life, including health-care
benefits, unit performance updates, expense accounting, procurement, and stock
purchasing. No wonder its staffs will rank the intranet as one of their top
three preferred sources of company information. I do hope more company can
develop their company-wide intranet to help improving the companys efficiency
and productivity. I do think the implementation of intranet like IBM may deliver the
immense informational resources of an organization to each individual's desktop
with minimal cost, time and effort.
Article 3: Wireless
gaining a niche in business
 Original
source
Summary:
First
of all, lets define the mobile
commerce. It is the use of radio-based wireless devices such as cell phones and
personal digital assistants to conduct business-to-business and
business-to-consumer transactions over wired, Web-based e-commerce systems.
The article argued that wireless and mobile business
transactions will increase considerably over the next few years. The
author cited that wireless and mobile transactions will account for nearly 20
percent of business-to-business (B2B) transaction volume and 25 percent of
business-to-consumer (B2C) traffic by 2003 worldwide.
As more and more business is conducted outside traditional corporate walls,
analysts and industry experts agree that the mobile and wireless computing
market is on the verge of explosive growth.
I would like to agree the estimate trend about the
wireless business and technology.
Advances in wireless technology increase the number of mobile device users and
give pace to the rapid development of e-commerce using these devices. Mobile
Technology has been very successful and grown rapidly in recent years.
