Well, um. It's a tossup. I became a JW because I needed a place where I felt safe. It worked pretty well, for a while.

If I hadn't been a Witness, I could have been a sterling, upstanding liberal politician, or a famous character actress, or an honest guru --

Or a mental patient. Take your pick.

Miserable as I was my last 15 years as a JW, and as essential as it was for me to leave, I can see that it bought me valuable time. At first. Nevertheless, I would have been better off today if I had left about 15 years before I did. I'm not sure that I would have been better off if I had never joined at all.
