I've heard of it, but I don't know if it was common practice in 1979.

I have no reference or proof and am going solely on memory. The x's were used before wprd processors and before typewriters had an erase feature. Maybe even before white-out was invented.

In those days, if you wanted to avoid x's: If a letter had a mistake, you had to retype the letter. And you could make another mistake. And retype the letter again and make another mistake...

Hence, to save money, they just x'ed it out and editted by hand.
