I think this is a bit ridiculous since the Bible doesn't say that Jesus was stabbed in the sternum, it says he was "jabbed" in the side. How can you get blood from the pericardium from a side jab?

A better explanation, of course, is pneumonia when water fills the pleural cavity which is on the side. Sometimes the pleural cavity is drained by doctors who jab the side.

Jesus was naked, he was impaled at 9:00 p.m. at night and we know it was cold at that time. Pneumonia was likely a common complication for impalees and the guards could recognize this and jabbed the side to release the extra fluid.

Doubtful Jesus died of a broken heart....
