Janey, Janey, Janey, (in my best imitation of Cary Grant)
I responded to Jan's personal attacks and non-answers below. See under the 3-28-99 messages.
Oh, really? Jan said, among other things, on 3-28-99: "You also ignored comments From RealJW, Ginny and others. So until you have answered all these messages, you should shut up with such lies." I have been waiting patiently in hopes that you would explain why, if correct pronunciation is so important to you, you are looking at the transliteration of Hebrew names into Greek? Why not go back to the original -- Hebrew?
You have also neglected to explain why names such as Joshua, Jerusalem, John, etc. are transliterated into Greek using iota, if iota is never transliterated as 'y' or 'j'.
Thirdly, what is the address for this oh so damning web site you keep bragging about? May we have a look, Janey dear?
I can understand Jan's frustration. If you have studied a foreign language, it should be obvious to you that languages often have sounds that cannot be directly transliterated into another language. Sometimes only a close approximation is possible. Greek did not have an alphabet to express all of the sounds in Hebrew. The people writing in Greek did the best they could with what they had to work with. To argue about correct pronunciation based on Greek is ludicrous. The difficulty of transliterating Hebrew continues today. Why do you think there are so many English variants of 'Hanukkah'?
If you don't like Jan, just tell him so. Norwegians are hardy and unpretentious and relish direct confrontation. Repeat after me, Janey: "Jan, I think you're an arrogant asshole." Now, doesn't that feel better?
