It would appear that technology which would allow us to go to the moon and Mars would have found a substitute for blood by now. But since medical science often takes the stand that there is no substitute for blood, perhaps researchers aren't trying hard enough.


Practicus why don't you try once and awhile to step outside of that narrow JW ideological provincialism before you hit the submit button?

The development of a oxygen carrying blood substitute that has a reasonable circulating life and does not induce renal shutdown will be a multi-billion dollar discovery. Two of the leading researchers in the field of blood substitues recently estimated that it would be worth 5 billion a year in the U.S. alone. There is no reticence on the part of pharmaceutical companies to develop such a substitute. A number of them (Alliance, Northfield, Baxter, Somatogen) have been feverishly working towards this goal for years.
