I had a very similar experience with some of my closest JW friends... When I was inactive for a while, I hesitantly told them about my "spiritual condition"... One acted like a pretentious little snot and suggested rather bluntly that we never speak to one another again. Yet another one of my friends was completely heartbroken, and I could sense it in her. She really didn't take it very well...
And then there was one "sister" who I was deeply in love with at the time... When I confessed my affection for her, she responded with the usual WT drivel without even saying anything about my professed love! It really broke my heart, because I realized that I had to cut her loose through two ways:
1) Tell her about my "spiritual condition," and cause her possible grief.
2) Don't tell her about my "spiritual condition," and gradually talk to her less and less.
I chose the second option, because I loved her, and I didn't want to hurt her...
Maybe it's best that you not tell this Elder about how you left the "Organization," especially when he's on his deathbed. There's no telling how he might take it... Still, if you feel you absolutely must tell him, then make sure you explain to him very politely why you chose to leave, and don't insult the "Society."
