I'd like to offer a simple exercise in proofism. This mode of reasoning came to my attention by the instructor of a basic math class (algebra review). Math has never been a good subject for me, but I used to solve story problems without math. The instructor of this particular math class noted that there is certain kinds of problem solving that non-math-types seemed to solve more readily than the astute mathematicians. Here is one of the easy ones, and if you're interested, I'll offer a more challenging one later.
Here's the problem. If you get the answer, how do you prove it mathematically?
Given: There is a group of 100 people.
All are either JW or Catholic.
There
is at least one JW and at least one Catholic.
In any combination of two people, at least one is Catholic.
Question: How many JWs are there in the group, and how do you prove it.
