Did you experience this yourself? What you says seems very incredible, because 1) it's the kind of challenge that is solved very easily through mathematical/logical reasoning; and 2) this particular question was so simple the solution should be immediately apparent to practically anyone.

Mathematical proof is actually not for beginners. Proving even the most trivial fact in math is often surprisingly difficult. I never learned anything close to proofs on high school, but I had some of that on Business School. Never got the hang of it, and I certainly can't remember it now. I guess an inductive proof should be feasible for this problem, but I will not try it myself.
