I can tell you a story of how one of my dogs got along great with our calico (who's been long dead). After a while, she'd hiss and growl at the dog when he sniffed her, but after a while, you'd often see the two cuddled right up against each other! I guess you could say they were like buddies after a while.
Right now, I have a somewhat chunky longhair chihuahuah. He's a cute and friendly runt who looks like a cross between a miniature collie and a fox, and, he has yet to snap at or bite someone. Pretty amazing for a breed that's notorious for snippiness... (Whatever you do, don't corner him... That's when he does turn vicious...)
Of course, that doesn't mean he won't bark, either... And when he does, he just doesn't stop. :o)
I guess that's why some say burglars avoid homes with small dogs...
