FORT LAUDERDALE When the Orioles filed into their home clubhouse after beating the Mets in a March 8 night exhibition game, they noticed that a locker against the south wall had been emptied completely.
The glove and the neatly pressed uniforms that had been hanging there just hours before were gone. All personal effects had disappeared. Even the nameplate above the locker had been taken down.
The vacant locker was the most poignant sign and the most dramatic evidence that the inevitable finally had taken place. Albert Belle had been forced out of the game by a degenerative and arthritic right hip.
The injury had become so painful it was able to accomplish what few major league pitchers could silence one of the most prodigious bats in the game over the last decade.
Belle, 34, was not at the ballpark that evening. The often self-absorbed slugger had not spoken to his teammates or management. A couple of hours earlier, club officials, uncertain of the turbulent slugger's whereabouts, issued a terse news release.
"Albert Belle has been found to be totally disabled and unable to perform as a major league baseball player," the statement said. "Belle has agreed that he is physically incapable of performing as a player and concurs with the findings of the doctors."
Those doctors, orthopedists Charles Silberstein and Michael Jacobs of the Orioles, had examined Belle a day earlier. They verified, as much for insurance purposes as anything else, that Belle could not play baseball. The doctors' diagnoses really weren't necessary. It was obvious to anyone who had seen Belle try to play this spring that he was unable to conduct most routine baseball functions without severe pain.
Even though he was adhering to his customary manner of keeping most of his thoughts to himself, the final denouement for Belle must have been emotionally agonizing.
He not only has been one of the most productive hitters in baseball over the past dozen years he led the majors in RBI during the 1990s with 1,099 he also had been one of its fiercest competitors.
He loved playing, and even more, he loved winning and vanquishing his opponents, be they other teams or rival pitchers.
The son of two Louisiana schoolteachers, Belle was one of the most intense players ever to wear a major league uniform. When he stood at the plate with his bat cocked, glaring out at the pitcher, he often looked like he was ready to maim.
When the right hip first started bothering him last summer, Belle amazed his teammates by continuing to play despite obvious pain. In fact, when the Orioles put him on the 60-day disabled list last week in order to assure they would collect the insurance on the $39 million in salary due him over the next three seasons, it was the first time Belle ever had gone on the DL in his career.
"I had a lot of respect for him before he came here (to the Orioles)," teammate Cal Ripken says, "and I have even more respect for him now.
"He always wanted to be the best. His intensity at the plate was almost unparalleled. Even to see him at the end, trying to battle the injury, showed how much heart and commitment he has. He just doesn't give up. That's a quality you admire."
The hip began bothering Belle last summer, and he since has regretted that he didn't approach team trainers or doctors about the problem. He had hoped that by resting during the All-Star break, the pain would ease.
It didn't. He began noticing that he was losing power, and that he was hampered on the basepaths and in the outfield. By the end of July the pain became so excruciating that he couldn't sleep one night on the road and finally had to pull himself out of the lineup.
Though he kept alive his streak of never going on the DL, he sat out 20 games until he was able to return to play at the end of September. For the year he hit .281 with 23 homers and 107 RBI. It was his lowest home run total since becoming a major league regular in 1991.
Belle worked rigorously over the winter to strengthen his right hip area. He genuinely believed that sweat and hard work would enable him to overcome the degenerative nature of the arthritis and allow him to continue his career. But when he began this spring trying to run on the field and swing a bat, it was obvious that even his willpower could not do the trick.
Belle has talked to Bo Jackson, another great athlete whose career as a football and baseball star was curtailed by a bad hip. Jackson had hip replacement surgery and found it nearly impossible to continue his career after the procedure. Jackson managed 160 games over two seasons after his surgery, but clearly he was not the same player.
Belle says his condition differs from Jackson's and that surgery was not an option for him, at least at this time. Belle like Jackson was such a superlative athlete that he could have chosen to play professional football or baseball.
Ironically, he opted for baseball, in part because he felt he could have a longer, more injury-free career. Yet, he said recently, it was the wear and tear of baseball that caused the injury. Still, though not quite a Cal Ripken, Belle played almost every game every year until the hip crippled him last year. Belle even led the majors in most consecutive games played for a while, after Ripken's famous consecutive-game streak ended a few years ago.
The loss of Belle will greatly impede the Orioles' offense. He was the only genuine power hitter in the lineup. David Segui, who has only one 20-homer season, now will bat cleanup.
Until his hip sapped the power from his bat last season, Belle had put up numbers that ranked with the all-time greats. Only two players in history Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx had more consecutive seasons with at least 30 homers and 100 RBI than Belle's eight (which tied him with Babe Ruth).
The right-handed hitter ends his career with a .295 average, 381 home runs and 1,239 RBI. Most of those numbers were accomplished with Cleveland, for whom he played from 1989 through '96. He also played two years with the White Sox before signing with Baltimore before the 1999 season.
Yet despite the loss of his tremendous bat at least when he was healthy the Orioles are not completely morose about losing Belle.
First, owner Peter Angelos gets to save approximately $30 million of Belle's salary through the insurance policy. It's not as if Belle would have been able to lead the woeful Orioles into competition for the playoffs. The club has finished fourth three years in a row, and it begins the 2001 season with less hope than in any of those previous losing seasons, even if Belle had remained.
The team also is trying to restructure itself as a younger, faster club, and Belle's presence in the lineup would have limited the playing time someone such as 26-year-old Chris Richard will now get. "With Albert being gone," manager Mike Hargrove says, "it makes getting at-bats for other people a lot easier."
Then, of course, there is the intangible side of Belle, the moody and often temperamental ballplayer who probably was known as much for his infamous outbursts against fans and journalists as he was for his artistry and power with a bat.
Privately, some in the Orioles' management circle saw Belle as a bad influence in the clubhouse, a somber and solitary man who could have a negative effect on young and impressionable players. He seldom openly befriended other players, even teammates, although he occasionally would engage in, or even initiate, clubhouse banter and game-playing.
Even Angelos, the equally combustible owner, admitted last year that his signing of Belle to the largest contract in team history was a mistake. Angelos was disappointed that Belle never equaled his previous power stats from Cleveland and Chicago during his two years in Baltimore. But the owner also had grown weary of Belle's clubhouse outbursts, as well as reports that Belle two years ago had responded crudely to fans after being taunted. (Belle claimed at the time he was the object of racial insults.)
Many fans and almost all baseball writers and front office officials took a dim view of Belle because of his frequently contentious ways. However, his fellow major leaguers generally viewed Belle's prodigious talent and deep commitment to the game with awe.
"It's sad," Marquis Grissom of the Dodgers says of Belle's exit. "I don't care what people said about his attitude and about what he did off the field.
"A lot of that had to do with the way he prepared for the game. He was very intense about getting ready to play. But he was an outstanding player. That's what I care about."
Chuck McElroy of the Orioles echoes the feelings of many major leaguers. He contends that Belle often was incorrectly portrayed by the media most of whom were open in their hostility to him in return for his general refusal to talk with them and never really understood by fans.
"Some people claim he's not great in the clubhouse and that he's selfish," McElroy says. "To me, that's not correct. He was a hard-nosed player, and in many ways he was a real leader. A lot of people didn't see the good side of Albert."
Belle didn't go out of his way to make it easy for himself. He not only had confrontations with the media, he also ignored them routinely, refusing to answer their questions or even to say hello.
Yet he was an extremely complex person as a ballplayer, far more intelligent than most of his peers and much more studious of the game itself. He also had a probing mind that extended way beyond the ball field. How many other players, for instance, would write a poem to fans, as Belle did once for The (Baltimore) Sun, or compose an op-ed piece on the dichotomy between God and the Big Bang theory?
Belle also gave out investment tips on a Web site he formerly operated and became almost as intense about playing chess in the past year as he did about baseball.
The debate already has begun whether Belle merits being voted into the Hall of Fame, a possibility that might be impeded by his negative relationship with the baseball media and his reputation as a surly person. The fact that he has thrown a ball at a fan, physically confronted members of the media and once chased down a trick-or-treater with his car certainly won't help him win votes.
But his main obstacle could be that he was not able to achieve certain career numbers because of his early departure from the game.
Belle's agent, Arn Tellem, has said that at some point Belle will talk about retirement. He said in January, discussing the impact of his injury, that he would not regret leaving the sport early because the game had been good to him and he already had accomplished so much.
The one thing he never was able to accomplish, though, besides a world championship, was to win the love of the fans.
Despite his tough veneer, that might mean more to Belle than he ever let on.
"All he wanted," former teammate McElroy says, "was respect."
