Crystal's Home > Internet Affect
One month before I started as a freshman student at UWEC, my parents bought me a new computer. I had had a lot of experience with computers, email, and the Internet before because my high school was very technologically advanced. But I had never had my own personal computer, and it was great! I was emailing, downloading music, copying CDs, and communicating with the world outside of Eau Claire. During that first month when I didn't have school my iternet connection was merely a source of fun, and granted it still is, I use it more for research purposes now, and try to not let it distract me too much from my homework and other duties.
Since one of my best friends goes to school in Minnesota, without the Internet I would be drowning in long distance phone bills. Through Yahoo Instant Messenger (IM) we are able to talk to each other several times a week at no charge. Since I don't have the brain capacity to IM and do my homework at the same time, I have to choose between the two. Now how can you tell your best friend that you would rather do your English research paper than talk to her?
When I do decide do my schoolwork, I love the fact that I can find peer reviewed articles in the UWEC library from the comfort of my own home. These scholarly journals that are published online provide accurate, useful information. One thing I think the library does need to do a little work on, is getting all those books online. Then I would really love the Internet!
Downloading free music from the Internet is another one of those things that takes up the precious time that I should be using to do something constructive. Although it does not take up as much time as my IMing habit, it still can be a big distraction from what my computer was originally meant for: homework.
