The day my best friend fainted in church
It
had been one crazy, crazy weekend! I don't want to reveal too many details
though, a girl has to have some secrets. I had been in Milwaukee
all spring break with my best friend, Lynn. We stayed with
some really good friends of mine who I haven't seen in 6 months..
It was just one big, joyful reunion! Marquette University has some odd
policies on visitors and curfews and stuff, so we mostly hung around the dorms
and had a good time. I am also a little leery of Downtown Milwaukee during the late evening hours,
so the dorms were not a bad choice.
The weekend was winding down and it was Sunday morning. We woke up around
11, and just, and I mean just made it to 11:30 Mass. Being in this huge,
awesome church, listening to a young priest was a nice change of pace, and
I was
enjoying every minute of it. The last couple of nights had been long, and we hadn't got
much sleep, but I was doing what I could to stay awake and alert.
I looked over
at Lynn, and she had her head hanging down with her eyes closed; the little rat
couldn't stay awake! Not that I could really blame her, but I didn't think
it was appropriate for her to be sleeping during the Gospel. I gave her a
nudge signaling for her to pay attention. She put out her hand out, and that's
when I noticed she looked really sick, and not tired at all. All of a
sudden she leaned forward and I thought she was going to blow chunks all
over,
right into the pew in front of us. Then she started to lean backwards,
then forwards again, and then she fell back. Out of reflex I reached out to catch her, as did my friend Ryan sitting on her other
side. She sort of ended up sitting on the pew. I didn't know what had
happened, then I felt a jolt of adrenaline rush through my body and make all my
senses come alive. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before and I
didn't know what to do. I shrieked: "Oh my gosh, Lynn, are you
okay?" We laid her on the pew as she was opening her eyes. The lady in the
pew behind us was talking to Ryan telling him what to do, and telling him to
hold her feet up. Everyone was asking if she was okay, and asking what happened.
She looked a little confused, and it seemed like she herself didn't have a clue
as to the events that just took place. She sat up, and said with an
awkward, and confused smile that she was okay. I still didn't know what to do. My
best friend had just fainted! Even though she said she was good, and that she
felt fine, I was still scared. As I stood back up and started listening to
the rest of the Gospel like everyone else, I couldn't help but keep turning
around to check on her about every five seconds. After church was over,
and we were standing on the sidewalk in downtown Milwaukee, I gave her a big hug
and told her very sternly that she was never ever to faint again!
