Their Story
The birth...
In 1995, Chris Kirkpatrick contacted former Disney “Mouseketeer”, Justin Timberlake, and asked him if he wanted to start a group. Justin was thrilled, and mentioned another former “Mouseketeer”, named JC Chasez, who was equally talented and definitely interested. The three met up in Orlando and went looking for a guy Chris had met at Universal Studios, named Joey Fatone, the Wolfman in Universal Studio’s Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue.
Joey agreed to join the band and the quartet was almost ready to start. In need of a bass voice, Justin contacted his old voice coach in Memphis, Tennessee, who recommended a young man from Mississippi named Lance Bass. Lance rushed to Orlando when he heard what Chris was planning. With all five members together, *NSYNC [a name they had created out of the last initials in each of their first names] was born in 1996.
The journey...
After a few months of working on dance routines and songs, they cut a demo tape and headed to Germany to test out their music and try to build a fan base. They were signed to BMG Ariola Munich and began touring. Before long *NSYNC was the hottest act in Europe and their singles “Tearin’ Up My Heart” and “I Want You Back” became huge hits.
The ups...
When they returned to the U.S. in 1998, they released their self-titled debut album and waited to see the response. The album went diamond, selling over ten million copies, and won them an American Music Award for favorite new artist (pop/rock).
Its success was followed by the holiday album "Home For Christmas", which went multi-platinum. A tour with Janet Jackson followed, and after a live concert on the Disney channel, *NSYNC was the hottest band on the planet.
...and the downs...
Unfortunately in 1999, the guys were then forced to deal with a legal dispute with their management team over finances, their freedom to make decisions, and even their own name. The guys settled the matter, signed a new record deal with Jive Records and picked up former “New Kids On The Block” manager, Johnny Wright.
The freedom...
Immediately, they returned to the studio and began working on their second album "No Strings Attached", the name coming from their newly gained freedom.
*NSYNC’s next album, "No Strings Attached", would set records with one million copies sold the first day and 2.4 million in the first week. Their hit song “Bye, Bye, Bye” was nominated for a Grammy award for song of the year, and the guys sold out every arena that was on the No Strings Attached Tour. The tour also set a standard for how huge acts should perform live.
The fame...
At the end of 2000 they were the biggest band in the world. That stature would inspire their third album “Celebrity” which was released in the summer of 2001.
"Celebrity" was almost completely written by the guys themselves and created four huge hits for *NSYNC. The song “Pop” became an anthem for an entire genre of music, and the five guys who were singing it coined the phrase “Dirty-Pop” as a more realistic picture of what they were doing. “Pop” was definitely the word of the year in 2001, as *NSYNC took their hit album on the road with the “POPODYSSEY Tour”. Selling out every major arena in the country, including Madison Square Garden in under an hour, the “POPODYSSEY Tour” was the most extravagant tour of the year. The tour was a huge success and was immediately followed up with the “Celebrity Tour”, which was a mellower venture with less glitz and more music.
The break...
It was the guys last project before they decided to take a well deserved break and focus on solo projects that they had been developing.
The future...
The group plans on returning to the studio early in 2004, to create an album that is different from anything they’ve done before.
