Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber (on the Tauber River), is a medieval walled city and is one of the most frequented towns in Germany. This is pretty obvious by the various languages displayed in signs throughout the city. As popular a location as it is, however, there are no trains that come here directly (unless you're coming from the small town of Steinach).

In World War II, allied bombing destroyed the eastern part of the old town (the center was mostly untouched). Fortunately, the city was able to rebuild according to medieval plans. As you walk along the parts of the city wall that has been rebuilt, names of people who donated money to rebuild the wall are inscribed in bricks.

The rooms in the Altfraenkische Weinstuber hotel are charming and cozy... although the downstairs seems to have an inordinate amount of stuffed animals (not toys) like the badger that watches people on their way to the stairs...
Shopping is one of the most popular activities in Rothenburg and Kaethe Wohlfahrt's immense selection of Christmas decorations provides many choices for souvenirs and gifts.

Hiking in southern Germany is apparently rather popular and there are a number of Wanderwegs outside the town. These are a great opportunity to see the surrounding countryside.
