| Door Decoration |
| Recently got the "cleaning out fever" and ran across a large brimmed straw hat that had once been decorated to hang on my mother's front door. She got tired of it after a while and passed it on to me. I threw it up on the top shelf of a closet and forgot about it. All the leaves and flowers had begun to fall off so I stripped the rest of them. If you have an old straw hat that you don't know what to do with or it's just taking up space lying around in the closet, buy some flowers and leaves and anything else that you like and hot glue them to the hat. You can add a wide ribbon and a large bow. Make it as fancy or as simple as you like. To hang it on the door, thread a small wire or some heavy clear thread through the edge of the brim and hang it over your wreath hanger or nail or whatever you happen to have on the door. Don't just hang it up without using the thread or wire or one of your neighbors will have a new decoration to hang on their door when the first big wind comes along. These also look pretty hanging in a hallway or foyer from one of those little wooden shelves with the wooden pegs. Add to that an old but nice shirt on another peg and maybe a garden tool, such as a trowel with a leather hanging loop, on another peg and you have something pretty to decorate an empty wall space. I had forgotten I had that hat when I was looking for a wreath for my front door but I did remember that I had a grapevine wreath that I had stored on my back porch. I had used it until all the flowers began to fall off so I stripped the rest of them off and vowed to one day fix the thing back with more flowers. When I couldn't find a wreath that I liked that was already made, I decided to once again use that grapevine wreath. I found a bunch of silk pansies that I liked along with another bunch of leaves. I cut the bunches the way that I wanted them and wired them to the grapevine wreath. I, also, added a little metal watering can by running a wire through the handle and then through the wreath. When I found some pansies at a garden center, I bought some and repotted them in some flower boxes and put them on each side of my front door. |
