The Room Plain
(For Theophane Boyd)

The room plain to see
is put together by four walls.
Nothing unusual there.
As you might expect, too,
there's a ceiling overhead,
but lower than your habit,
and beneath your feet
flooring made of stone.
Like every room you've
ever been in this one has
a way in, which serves
as well for a way out.

You respect the space
and it's arrangement
but you never expect
to be confined there
the day long as so many
were before you, long ago.
All rooms by degree fit
the description you see
still this one's an exception,
being a monk's cell, and what sets
it apart really are its dimensions.
It sits cave-like the size of
a coffin.
