Teri & Crystal's Marathon Training Journal Page 3

25 & 26 Aug
Ran 14 miles - Teri went on Saturday to Long Beach so she could be a good person and go to church on Sunday.  The sun came out about 9 am which made for a hot run, but she finished and was very glad to be done.  Crystal ran on Sunday to be with the Manhattan Beach pace group.  The route included nearly 8 miles on the wood chips which made for a very long, very dirty day.  The group made a tactical error on the course and ended up only running 13.5 miles, but again everyone was very glad to get done!!

29 Aug Ran 2 miles - Unfortunately this was my only maintenance run this week.  Teri was out of town and I was a wimp when it came to running on my own.

2 Sep Ran 7 miles Teri had stayed out on the east coast after her business trip, but she found the group training out in Washington DC and went out with them. She wrote about it at her website, go ahead and she what she wrote and the pictures she took.   http://www.geocities.com/tericee/journal.html .

4 Sep Ran 2 miles Teri went for her usual run/walk with out neighbor Diane, while Crystal slogged it out on the streets of Redondo Beach.  But as a special treat she got to stop at the local juice shop and got a orange/banana smoothie.

6 Sep
Ran 2 miles Not much of a change from Tuesday.  Teri is going out with Diane tonight.  Although Crystal mixed it up a little and ran through the mean streets of Manhattan Beach tonight.

8 Sep Ran 16 miles Crystal, silly girl that she is, went to visit her grandmother on the weekend of a long run.  Luckily her mom was visiting too and helped to map out a 4 mile course to do laps around.  There was some confusion regarding pace until mom revealed each lap wasn't 4.0 miles long but 4.4.  This was discovered the final lap and resulted in much rejoicing on Crystal's part as she could stop short of completing the final lap.

After returning home she discovered that Grandma didn't keep ice cubes in the house, so the cool down routine consisted of some streching, aspirin, a nap and prayer for no aching muscles.  The final one didn't come true.

9 Sep Ran 16 miles Teri, who actually stayed in CA, got up and at 'em to start running at 6 AM.  The group decided to try the 2 minutes running and 2 minutes walking pace.  Teri related that while it seemed like a good idea at the beginning it wasn't such a good idea at the end.  We'll probably go back to our 2-3 pace this weekend.

12 Sep Ran ? miles Teri was out of town, but luckily on the west coast.  She had a slight accident while wearing civilian clothes (no uniforms for military for awhile) and was unable to run.  Crystal meanwhile was addicted to watching the news coverage so she jogged on the mini-trampoline in the living room while watching TV for 45 minutes.

The updates for the maintenance runs during the week have fallen by the wayside.  I got caught up in so many other things.  So from now on I'll only be updating the long runs from now on.

16 Sep Ran 8 miles Well here I was running back in California.

23 Sep Ran 18 miles Crystal was running with the Rosa Mota's in El Segundo again.  Teri walked with the Rosa's in Long Beach.  She wanted one more week of walking not running.  So Crystal did water volunteer duty in Long Beach and Teri did it in El Segundo.  The north group left the starting point and ran by the beach down into Torrance.  We then turned inland and climbed a small hill running on the grass median.  It felt really good on my ankles.  Then it was down (and up) in Palos Verdes.  But Teri was there with directions, cookies, and encouragement.  So up the final hill we went before turning around and heading all the way back.

29 Sep Ran 9 miles Teri and Crystal  ran in Long Beach this week because of plans on Sunday.  I mean there was wine to be drunk in Temecula.  We ended up breaking away from the main Rosa group with Greg from the Greta group who works for Gateway, plus a girl who's name I can't remember.  It was a good recovery run even if we did go a little fast.

7 Oc
t Ran 20 miles As I, Crystal, write this weeks later I now know that this was very fateful day.  I had changed shoes for the 9 mile run, but they didn't give enough support for my right ankle that pronates.  So I had gone to what was supposed to be a great running shoe store.  Well, I asked for shoes with ultra support and that's what I got.  They however didn't have enough padding for my left ankle and I ended up getting acute stress fracture.  At the time my ankle really hurt at the end of the run, but I thought it was just the result of a long run.

14 Oct Ran 5 miles It was supposed to be a 10 mile run, but the pain in Crystal's ankle was so bad she had to quit after 5.  Teri got through all 10 of course though.  A couple days later Crystal met up with a friend who happened to be a doc and he perscribed a walking cast to be worn when not on a training run.  He also said I needed to walk all my training runs for the next 3-4 weeks.

21 Oct Walked 10 miles This was the first big test of the walking cast.  Crystal had only worn it for 2 days before the walk.  Teri kept up with the runners while Crystal walked with Carol who had a sore knee. She had thought about stopping at the 8 mile mark, except someone told the water stop people there was no one left on the course so the only way to get home was to finish the walk
