After Sept 25th we had to make a new plan. The season upriver from Mt Village stayed open until the end of September. The plan was to go to my old stomping grounds in Russian Mission on the last weekend. The weather closed in on us on Friday but by Saturday we had a window of opportunity. It was short lived however. We made our way to Marshall, our first night location to hunt approximately 85 miles by boat from Mt. Village. We hunted in Dave Herbert tree stand on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Woa was that and experience. For a rookie moose hunter Dave knows how to build em high. Dave's tree stand was at least 40 feet of the ground and offered quite a view. Dave had killed his first moose in the meadow the weekend earlier. With no sign of a moose we broke camp and headed 50 more miles upriver in a rain and wind storm that had caused most people to stay home. We saw only one boat on the river the rest of the day. |
On the way up we were going through Seven Miles slough about 5 miles below Russian Mission. It was my favorite place to hunt when living there. We were fortunate to find this old boy walking up the banks of the narrow slough as were made our way through the shallow waterway. It happened so fast and precariously that it offered Garrity no time to get a chance to shoot. If we were going to get the moose I was going to have to do the shooting. With only one day left of the season it didn't take long to decide. Garrity was able to fire the final shot when we closed in. Our trip to Russian Mission ended up taking place in the dark by way of spotlight and GPS. We arrived in Russian Mission to wake our friend Jason Moen from his beauty sleep. I worked for two days in Russian Mission at the school prior to heading down river. |

With rain coming down in sporadic heavy showers I decided to construct a tarp covering for our convenience. |
Garrity was anxious to help in anyway and delighted in helping me skin. We took a lot of time and had an enjoyable evening bagging the legs for transport. Thank goodness for only a 50 yard pack. |

With Pilcher Mountain, outside of Marshall to our back we throttled up and headed down river. The Yamaha 50 hsp 4 stroke truly performed flawlessly for us this fall, and saved us a lot of fuel. At $3 per gallon the savings add up fast. |
With 85 miles of smooth water ahead of us, clear skies and an incredible sunset I sat back and enjoyed the boat ride to Mt. Village. Garrity spending the last hour a sleep on my shoulder. It was truly an incredible journey. We were met on the beach right before dark by Jeanie, the girls and Gary. |
