The War of the Worlds by HG Wells
Finally, I'm getting around to reading some of the classics that I should
have finished some time ago. This story is not just about Martian invasion,
but also a critial look at the British society and infrastructure of
one hundred years ago. In particular the account of the population of
London: "...it was a stampede...without order and without a goal,
six million people unarmed and unprovisioned driving headlong. It was
the beginning of the rout of civilisation, of the massacre of mankind."
His
Dark Materials (trilogy) by Philip Pullman
I'm not enclined to rave about the trilogy like some of those who
recommended it to me. However, a lot of the themes resonated with
me and Pullman's world is populated with some wonderful and monsterous
characters and creatures.

rear of a motor vehicle to reduce the tendency to life off the road
at hight speeds. 3 sombody or something that spoils, esp
a story published in a newspaper to spoil another paper's sales.
