The Greatest Non-Typical Hero Ever Created

It's easy to see now why so many people from so many places are attracted to the idea of the Dark Knight, to the Batman. His origin is real enough that it touches us all. He releases dark desires in all of us to see a strict justice enforced upon the wicked. And by being driven to be that way, he has changed an entire medium of creative expression. Gold comments, "Batman is the strength of the comic book medium: the symbol of just how good comics can be" (p. 16). He had to withstand the test of time to accomplish this, but there are many of us who are truly grateful that he did. And it's a comfort to know that he will always be there for us when we need him, a shadow lurking in the dark edges of our imagination and dreams as an inspiration for those who truly want to do good in this world. Batman promises to be timeless, saying, "When I looked at that shining city I never saw myself in it. As if I'd be gone when it became a perfect place. Now Gotham is gone and I'm still here" (O' Neil, p. 11).
