I've included reviews, top ten lists, and a brief history of my own musical escapades.
My Top Ten Songs:
Pink Floyd - Money
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
From the Vault:
Led Zeppelin - The Immigrant Song
The Choir - Circle Slide
Metallica - Sad But True
Recently I revisited this band from my high school days, when I listened exclusively to Christian music. After all this time, and all my exposure to other bands and styles of music, I'm happy to say The Choir still sounds very good. Particularly the 1990 album Circle Slide, my personal favorite and a breakthrough for them. Gentle vocals, airy synth sounds, and saxaphone define this semi-concept album. I say semi because it's not one whole song or one whole story, but similar musical themes and sound effects are used throughout. I am also struck by the deeply theological lyrics: "Around my neck, over my heart, I wear a wooden cross. And sometimes I remember what freedom costs" or "I crawl to you with ten fingers bleeding from turning the pages of sin." I don't think they say Jesus' name anywhere on the album. It's a Christian's Christian music. The last track, "Restore My Soul" remains my favorite.
