Alice In Chains
One of my favorite bands from the nineties. Why? They hit hard, but their acoustic album showed that they acually had talent. Layne Staley's vocals: the single most copied singing style of our modern era (caveat: Ed Vedder). They led the way for lesser bands like Godsmack and other "new metal" bands. They set it up, so to speak. They are passionate, not repetitive. Guitar riffs are creative and blend well with the vocal line. The occasional violin or odd instrument adds depth without sounding overproduced.

Cake - Pressure Chief
Ah, Cake. I remember first hearing "Going the Distance" back in high school and thinking "what the...?" In an age of plaid clad grunge rockers, Cake was one of the bands that stood out. And the best thing is, they have been around forever. And they are still making great music. Take their lastest project, Pressure Chief. It is unmistakedly a Cake album. The bass is punctual, with upbeat riffs that keep stacatto time. I love how rhythmic the songs are; the drums, bass and guitar work together to lay down a rhythmic foundation. Of course, over that synthesizer, organ, and trumpet parts add interesting melodic strains.

Best Trax: All of 'em. My favz: Dime, End of the Movie

Two cents to anyone who's heard of this French DJ. Most have probably heard his work in Snatch. Let me just raise a few points as to why I like him. Rhythm is my favorite part of music, so a nice raw beat like that in Definitive Beat or Disco Science automatically makes it a favorite track of mine. I guess a drummer appreciates a good beat. Also, his melodies and atypical song structure (ex. Paradise) round out the sound. This leads to the third point: variety. Although several tracks I have heard have strong melodies, he doesn't leave his DJ roots. Take Never Young Again. The average pop fan might not like it, but drum and bass fans appreciate the emphasis on rhythmic elements. Finally, his unique "stretching" effects and funk guitar riffs are a nice distinct touch. You know it isn't Moby. You know it isn't The Crystal Method. Somewhere in between pop musician and strict DJ is right where I like to be.

Best Trax: Disco Science, Paradise, I Can't Wait
