History of Snowboading

1960s A surfer from Michigan named Sherman Poppen created the Snurfer. The Snurfer was created by bracing two skis together and adding a rope at the front for steering. Sherman Poppen sold close to one million units by 1970.

1970s The first modern snowboard company was created when Dimitrije Milovich, founded Winterstick in 1972. Winterstick's boards came equiped with steel edges, laminated fiberglass and, nylon straps to hold one's feet. Winterstick's boards let riders navigate more treacherous terrain.

Snowboarding became increasingly popular after a rivalry between Jake Burton and Tom Sims. Tom Sims was a professional skateboarder that founder, SIMS Snowboarding in 1976. Jake Burton was a carpenter that created Burton Boards in 1977.

1980s Snowboarding was growing in popularity and it did not have a good reputation. The majority of snowboarders at this time were screwballs. At this time most ski resorts in North America had banned snowboarding.

1990s Almost every ski resort in North America allowed snowboarders and snowboarding becomes the fastest growing winter sport.
