From the research I have done to date, it looks like the first Letzkus's came to the United States in the mid 1800's. These Letzkus's were from Germany, specifically, Wurtemberg Germany. During this time in history,Germany was experiencing severe depression, unemployement, political unrest, and failure a of the liberal revoltionary movement. The first Letzkus's primarily ended up in western Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh), West Virginia (Wheeling) and Ohio. I have been able to find 4 individual immigration records for Letzkus:
- Joseph Letzkus who arrived in Allegheny County, PA in 1854
- Joseph Letzkus who arrived in New York City, NY in 1848 (he was 18)
- John Letzkus who arrived in Allegheny County, PA in 1876
- Wilhelm Letzkus who arrived in New York City, NY in 1859 (he was 21)
The attached EXCEL file to the left can be downloaded. It contains a list of Letzkus's in the US primarily from Census data. I am attempting to group families together according to the census data at the time. This took me a lot of work to put it together and I hope you find it interesting.
