letterbox
has been described as a "..sort of Xavier Rudd, John Butler Trio,
type of band.." much to the amusement of sing-songwriter, Vic
Farrell. "I've been called a '12 string pluckin' Rickie-Lee Jones'
too" says Vic, which is a bit closer to the mark. That kind of
smokey-cool folk pop in the late 70's early 80s is the main influence
of Vic's singing style while the range of genre's that letterbox tackles
is very wide indeed. Klezmer (jewish gypsy), jazz, rootzy-americana-folk
to pop urban ballads. It is a rare thing for a new band to get any review so it is with great delight I have to announce that two of my songs were reviewed at the Bat and Ball Hotel Open Mic Australia Night. However, it is also with trepidation that I make the link to the review as there are two rather unflattering photos of me. I teamed up with James Henry and Ladybelle that evening which was fun. Review and said sad photos here. |
Who
is letterbox ?
Tim Watts(Double Bass) and Garnet Meekings (Drums) formerly of Peter-Miller
Robinson Group have played on RN Late Night Live, and at various acoustic
venues around Sydney including The Basement. The teamed up with songwriter
Vic Farrell, who's folk festival gigs took her all over the country
until settling in Sydney in 2001. letterbox has realised the heart
of cool soul pop that Vic Farrell has long sought after. Vic writes
songs about urban landscapes, loves the sound of acoustic instruments
and is heavily influenced by songwriters such as Shane MacGowan, Joni
Mitchell and Rickie-Lee Jones, as well as her many Sydney song-writing
friends, Melanie Horsnell, Wons Phreely, Wesley Carr and James Henry.
