Alnwick Harrier David Kirkland
repeated his 2008 victory in yesterday's 23rd Norham 10km Road Race. In
the ideal conditions,
Kirkland, who only 2 weeks ago, won
the Robin Hood Marathon in Nottingham, proved too strong for the
140-strong field, coming home 59secs ahead of Matthew Bell of
Edinburgh. Andrew Crichton of Dunbar, the current Northumberland
Schools Cross Country champion, finished another 31secs adrift in 3rd.
Fiona Forrest of Gala easily won the
Womens' race.

Northern Athletics Road Relay
Championships.
Carnegie College Campus, Leeds.
Sat. 26th Sept.
Chester Le Street gained their fourth
successive title, in the Northern Athletics Senior Womens' 4 Stage Road
Relay Championship at Leeds Carnegie Campus, on Saturday.
Melissa Turner brought the Durham club
in home in 2nd place on leg 1, a position maintained by Sarah Wilkinson.
Alyson Dixon took Chester Le
Street into the lead on leg 3, her time only being bettered by first
leg winner, Susan Partridge of Leeds.
Maxine Czarnecka maintained the
advantage on leg 4 as Chester Le Street's margin of victory extended
to 2mins 17secs over Hallamshire.
Liverpool Harriers took third place,
while Chester Le Street's B team finished in an excellent 6th position.
Tracy Laws had lifted them up to 2nd after leg 3.
Morpeth (11th), Gateshead (13th) and
New Marske (17th) all claimed top twenty placings.
In the Senior Mens' 6 Stage Relay,
defending champions, Leeds City were easy winners.
However, Morpeth finished in 4th place
only five seconds behind 2nd placed Salford, and 2secs behind
Altrincham in 3rd.
Morpeth were lying in 2nd after Jon
Taylor's 2nd leg and were back up to third after Ian Hudspith's 4th
leg. Michael Dawson maintained third on leg 5, but Chris Simpson was
relegated to fourth after a fine last leg by Salford's Andi Jones.
Sunderland through brothers Patrick
and Jack Martin had led after the first two legs, with top veteran,
Brian Rushworth dropping to 2nd. However, a weaker second set of
runners, saw the Wearsiders drop to 14th. Gateshead moved through to
10th place and New Marske finished 18th. The Morpeth and Gateshead B
teams also achiieved top thirty placings.

27th Sunderland Open
Cross Country Races.
Farringdon College. Sat.12th
Sept.
Sunderland Harriers regained the
Senior Mens' Relay title, at their own Cross Country promotion at
Farringdon College on Saturday.
On one of the best afternoons for
weather, this summer, the host club led all the way as Jack Martin came
home well clear on the first leg in the day's fastest time.
Brian Rushworth, who opted for the
Senior rather than the Veterans' team, extended the lead on leg
2, with Damien Weston and Jason Waite maintaining the advantage on the
final two legs. Heaton finished in second place with Gateshead taking
third.
Sunderland also won the Veterans'
Relay for the third successive year.
Brian Bewick was headed by Morpeth's
Paul Waterston on leg 1, though the pair were well behind Stewy Bell of
Chester Le Street. Tim Field took the Wearsiders into a clear lead
on leg 2 as Michael Thompson and Paul Merrison brought Sunderland home
1min 31secs ahead of Morpeth, whose last leg runner, Phil Walker
clocked the fastest time.
In a good quality Senior Womens' race,
Rosie Smith of Durham, based in Scotland over the last few years,

Hexham to Ovingham. Sun. 6th
Sept.
Alnwick Harrier David Kirkland strode
to a comfortable victory in yesterday's Tynedale Jelly 10M race from
Hexham to Ovingham.
In the overcast and showery
conditions, a group of five soon broke away from the 530-strong field
with Morpeth's Kristian Forster the first to lose contact after
2M. Kirkland made his bid for victory on a downhill stretch after
5M with only Heaton's James Buis covering the break for a brief
spell. Jon Archer of Low Fell and Darren Purvis of Chester Le
Street had dropped another 50m behind.
Kirkland extended his advantage to
39secs at the finish line with Buis finishing in 2nd place. Archer came
home third and the first three runners also had the satisfaction of
clocking personal best times.
With Paul Waterston in 12th and Phil
Walker (14th) the leading veterans to finish, backing up Forster in
5th, Morpeth took the team title.
Elswick's Alison Dargie was the first
lady, finishing in 53rd position overall. Heaton's Jo Zoppi finished
2nd with Tynedale's Joanne Lee, the leading veteran in third.
Heaton won the team event.
The first three Men and Women also
took the medals in the incorporated North Eastern Counties'
Championship.
