Middlesbrough
Tees Pride 10km.
Sun. 21st Sept.
Morpeth Harrier Ian Hudspith was an
impressive winner of
yesterday's fourth Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10km. In the ideal
conditons, the leading group in the record field of over 2000 runners,
was down to two at 3km with Hudspith joined by Stephen Hepples of
Loftus the winner in 2006 and 2007.
A surge on the downhill stretch from
4km to 5km saw Hudspith pull away from his rival as he passed halfway
in 14mins 40secs.
Hudspith increased his advantage
to 34secs at the finish line, missing the course record set
in 2005 by only 7secs. Mark Hood of Sunderland dropped Scottish
visitor John Newsom in the final 100m to take third place.
British Masters 10M champion Stewy
Bell of Chester Le Street was the leading veteran in 7th position.
New Marske completed a successful
weekend to take the team honours.
Another Chester Le Street athlete Angela Hibbs fought off the
challenge of Middlesbrough's Carolyn Summersgill to win the Womens'
race. Hibbs who finished 42nd overall took 12secs off her previous best
time for the distance.
Helen Cross of Pocklington finished
3rd, while Nicol Kent of Loftus was the leading veteran in 7th, taking
her club to the team title..

more finishers as last time seems on "quick" side, for this type of
field. Please note that
positions from Kim Crowther should read 11 onwards. According to Frank Johnson fifth kilometre was
covered
in 2mins 28secs, which seems extremely fast. Les Smith finished 38th
(36:03) and Dave Whitmore 844th (3rd M70) (50:55).
Sunderland Open Cross Country Races.
Farringdon College. Sat. 20th
Sept.
New Marske Harriers easily won the
feature event at Saturday's Sunderland Harriers Cross Country Races at
Farringdon College, taking the Senior Mens' Relay title.
The winter season opened in what was
ironically, one of the most pleasant days of the year.
The Cleveland club, 2nd in
2007, came home 2nd on leg 1 through Dominic Shaw, with Gosforth
in the lead as Matthew Nicholson clocked the fastest time of the day.
Shaun O'Grady took the lead on leg 2 with Russell Best and Ricky
Stevenson extending the advantage to 2mins 52secs over an inspired
Heaton squad, who took second place ahead of Gosforth.
Host club Sunderland repeated their
2007 victory in the Veterans' race. Brian Rushworth who moved the
Wearsiders up from 2nd to 1st on leg 2, clocked the fastest time.
Mary Ferrier of Gateshead held off the
strong challenge of Sunderland's Michelle Holt to win the Womens' race.
The runner-up only six days earlier led the North East to the silver
medals in the Inter Regional Half Marathon championship at Nottingham.
Rebecca Oldham of Gateshead
impressively won the Under 17 race.
Other winners included Matthew Rice of
Gosforth (Under 17 Men), George Lowry of Jarrow (Under 15 Boys), Rachel
Denton of Morpeth (Under 15 Girls), Robbie Loraine of Gateshead (Under
13 Boys) and Sophie Forster of Birtley (Under 13 Girls).

Durham probably most affected as parts
of South Durham were classed as Tees Valley.
Weather was dry and bright but wind
was quite strong (mostly in favour of athletes). However wind readings,
which were taken, are not listed on official results.

Tynedale Jelly Tea 10M Road
Race.
Hexham - Ovingham. Sun. 14th
Sept.
Morpeth Harrier Nick Swinburn strode
to a comfortable victory in yesterday's Tynedale 10M Road Race from
Hexham to Ovingham.
In the thankfully dry, but breezy
conditions, a group of 4 athletes soon headed the record field of 600
runners, with Swinburn being joined by David Kirkland of Alnwick, Stewy
Bell of Chester Le Street and Jon Archer of Low Fell. Swinburn made two
unsuccessful early efforts to break way, and the quartet were together
at halfway (26:56). Kirkland made his bid for victory in the 6th
Mile covered in 5mins 10secs, with only Swinburn covering the move.
Kirkland held a slight advantage at 9M
(48:02) before Swinburn kicked away on the final downhill section, to
the finish at Ovingham Middle School.
The margin of victory was 11secs,
while Bell finished another 37secs adrift in 3rd place. The first three
competitors also took the medals in the North Eastern
Counties Championship, while Bell won the British Masters title, the
two competitions being incorporated in the event.
Morpeth took the team honours.
Angela Hibbs of Claremont easily won
the Womens' race finishing in 55th position overall.
Fiona Shenton of Elvet was the leading
veteran in 2nd place with Aiveen Fox of Morpeth finishing 3rd.
The first three again took the
Counties' medals and North Shields Poly took the team honours.
The Poly were led home by Heather
Lambert in 6th place She was also first in the British
Masters Championship, as Shenton
was not included in the advanced entry. Lambert won the Over 50 title.
Other local winners in the Masters
event were Ian Twadde of North Shields Poly (Over 35), Rob Hand of
Durham (Over 45), Mark McNally of Elswick (Over 60), Walter Ryder of
Morpeth (Over 70), Lisa Walker of Wallsend (Over 35), Lynne Marr of
Tynedale (Over 45), Janette Kilgour of Claremont (Over 55) and
Christine Lee of Elswick (Over 65).
Team titles went to North Shields Poly
(Over 35), Sunderland (Over 40), North East Veterans (Over 60) and
Tynedale (Over 35 Women).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Apologies to Claire
Jackson who I overlooked as the leading BMAF veteran. Also Kath Stewart
3rd W65 (and in BMAF) (92:35). Weather overcast
early on, and some sunshine later. 597 finishers (last time 2:24:47).
(nb. 2nd last time: 1:54:07). Mile splits (courtesy of Bill McGuirk)
were: 5:15, 10:38, 16:05, 21:40, 26:56, 32:06, 37:08, 42:23, 48:02.
Later found out that Mike Hager's time was a UK Masters' record
bettering Steve James' 16-year-old figures by 22secs (this info from
Bill McGuirk via Ron Stewart).
Personality performances included: George Routledge (593rd in 1:51:51).
None of his main rivals were there. Other Heaton H performances
