Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10km Road
Race.
Sun. 16th Sept.
Cleveland-based Steven Hepples
repeated his 2006 victory in yesterday's 3rd Tees Pride Middlesbrough
10km Road Race.
A record field of just under 2000
runners took part, but the windy conditions meant fast times were
out of the question. Hepples and Gateshead Harrier Alan Buckley dropped
Scotland-based Kenyan Zakary Kihara at the 4km point. Passing through
halfway in 14:59, the pair were still together, until Hepples kicked
away from his rival in the final km.
Buckley, resident near Leeds, who
makes his Marathon debut in Berlin in two weeks time, took
second place with Kihara finishing third.
Hepples took the incorporated North
Eastern Counties' title with Stewy Bell of Chester Le Street (6th) and
Terry Wall of Morpeth (7th) taking the minor medals.
Gary Dunn of Thirsk in 5th position,
was the leading veteran.
Birmingham-based Kenyan Catherine
Mutwa easily won the Womens' race finishing in 18th place
overall. Mutwa smashed the 2-year-old course record by a massive
1min 43secs.
Claire Robson of Teesdale took second
place ahead Josephine Buckley of Halifax, wife of Alan.
Robson took the North Eastern title
ahead of 2006 winner, Louise Noble of Sunderland who finished
in 5th this time. Lisa Finlay of North Yorks Moors in 6th, took
the bronze medal and was also the leading veteran.

Round-up
(to 2nd Sept).
Congratulations to all our medallists and pb performers at the recent
World Championships. Not sure who was giving advice to our 1500m
runners, who were told to run the shortest possible route ? All
this resulted in the athletes being completely boxed in at vital times.
As Steve Cram says, it pays to run wide even if it involves covering an
extra distance. Johanna Jackson finished 25th in 20km Walk
(99:34) behind Russian O Karishkina (90:09). Unfortunately Vicky Barr
did not get run in 4x400m. However, in final I think the running order
cost us silver. I found myself agreeing with Michael Johnson nearly all
the time.
