Whalton Classic 5M Road Race.
Whalton, Northumberland.  Sun. 1st Oct.
Mark Brown of Morpeth was an easy winner of the second Whalton Sumer Classic 5M Road Race, yesterday. In the bright and warm conditions, Brown led from gun to tape, opening up a 25secs lead over the chasing group after the first Mile (4:45). With the hillier section of the course to come, Brown continued to pull away, and despite a visible sign of tiring in the final 2M, the winning margin was still well over a minute at the finish line. David Swinburne took second place ahead of the leading veteran and 2005 winner, Les Atkinson, making it a clean sweep for host club Morpeth. Brown's time also bettered the inaugural course record by 79secs.
North Shields Poly newcomer, Jane Goble gained an easy victory in the Womens' race taking a masive 1min 37secs off the previous winning time. Sue Laws of Derwentside led the veterans home in 2nd place, ahead of Sunderland junior, Natalie Miller.

Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside. Sat. 30th Sept.
Gateshead Harrier John Gibson comfortably won the Junior Great North Run at Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside, on Saturday. In the warm and sunny conditions, Gibson (16) (7th in 2005), dictated the early pace in the 1600 strong field along with clubmate and fellow Royal Grammar School pupil, Tom Perrins. Gibson dropped his rival approaching the 3km point with Shildon's Khalil Thompson moving through in the closing stages to take second place ahead of Perrins. Morpeth's Laura Weightman (15) repeated her 2005 victory in the Girls' race, finishing in 23rd position overall, Clubmate, Zoe Armstrong took second place ahead of visiting Leicester athlete, Charlotte Wilkinson Burnett.
The seperate race for the Under 13 age-group attracted another 1600 runners, and was won easily by New Marske's Mark Shaw (12). The current North Eastern Counties' Cross Country champion, and Inter Counties' silver medallist, led all the way, coming home nearly 200m clear of Linlithgow athlete, Jake Wightman, the son of race commentator and former Marathon International, Geoff. Michael Smith of Oldham finished in 3rd place. Laura Roberts (11) from Bridgend made the long journey worthwhile by easily winning the Girls' race. Finishing in 8th place overall, she came home 300m clear of the Templeman twins, Elizabeth and Katy from New Marske.
Mark Wilson from Darlington won the Mini Run for Under 9 runners, in a sprint finish over Oldham's Robert Smith. Jarrow's Stephanie Addison won the Girls' event, again in a sprint finish from 2005 winner, Martha Wightman, sister of Jake.

Also I am almost sure, Karl Taylor crossed finish line in 10th position.
Zoe Armstrong finished 39th overall. Some clubs given in results and noted others, as runners crossed line. Recorded these races on CBBC, but somehow lost Telewest connection, during day. Winners both received a new trophy, given in memory of Stan Long.

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Hartlepool Marina.  Sat. 23rd Sept.
Morpeth Harriers and Chester Le Street gained double gold for the North East, with victories at Saturday's North of England Road Relay Championships, at a warm and sunny Hartlepool Marina. Whereas Chester Le Street led all the way to regain the Womens' 4 stage title, Morpeth left it to the final 50m to gain a hat trick of victories, in the Mens' 6 stage event. Morpeth occupied 15th place on leg 1, when Mark Brown was edged out by their B team runner, David Swinburne. Liverpool were the leaders, with Phil McGlory clocking the day's fastest time. Dan Samuels moved through to 3rd on leg 2, behind Salford and Sale. Liverpool regained the lead on leg 3, with Michael Morris taking Morpeth into second place. Martin Scaife maintained second on leg 4, but Andy Jones had taken Salford back into the lead. Salford held on to the lead on leg 5, with  Morpeth having to make up a 14secs deficit in second place. Tarus Elly went off quickly for the leaders but struggled in the latter stages, as Hudspith matched strides with 1km remaining. However, Elly temporarily took the lead again, until Hudspith kicked past his rival in the final 100m. Liverpool took third place, ahead of Altrincham, with Sunderland running well to finish 5th. Morpeth B finished in 12th place, ahead of Gateshead, for whom Andy Buckley moved from 38th to 15th on leg 3. Gosforth (14th), North Shields Poly (18th), Elswick (21st), Durham City (24th) and Chester Le Street (26th) all qualified for the National event at Sutton Coldfield in 4 weeks time. Fastest of the region's athletes was Ryan McLeod, who moved Elswick from 47th to 23rd on leg 3.
Chester Le Street, third in 2005 and winners in 2003, were never troubled in the Womens' race, with Dianne Henaghan coming home 12secs clear on leg 1. Kathryn Waugh, Morag McDonnell and Alyson Dixon extended the advantage to a massive 2mins 23secs at the finish line over Liverpool, with Wigan Phoenix in third. McDonnell's time was only bettered by Rotherham's Jennie Blizzard, who moved her club from 16th to 2nd on leg 2. Darlington, who crossed the finish line in third place, were later disqualified as one of their runners, was not officially entered in the race. Gateshead, Chester Le Street B, Morpeth B, Heaton, Loftus and Sunderland, all made top twenty placings.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. Results this year, courtesy of Joe Lee. Womens' result on paper, but Mens' from website (on by 6.00pm). However, not as easy as usual to report on race, as such things as time gaps between leaders, not given. Luckily I have a mathematical brain (thoughts of "power of ten"). Lovely weather but a little cooler towards sea. Apologies to Morpeth Womens' A team (especially Jane Mooney who lifted them to 3rd), who were inavertantly omitted from report. Was in notes, but mind went blank when typing report. 26 Senior Womens' teams completed and 71 Senior Men. In Mens' event: Ricky Stevenson ran an excellent opening leg to finish 5th. Heaton details were: Women leg positions: 20,14,15,14. British Masters Cross Country Relay Championships.
Farringdon School, Sunderland.  Sat. 16th Sept.
North East clubs dominated the British Masters Relay Championships, which were incorporated in the Sunderland Cross Country Meeting. The host club easily won the Over 40 event over 6 stages. Sunderland were lying in third place, through Brian Bewick on leg 1, with North Shields Poly's Ian Twaddle coming home in first, in the day's quickest time. Martin Armstrong, like Twaddle, one of two Over 35 athletes allowed per club, took the lead for the Wearsiders on leg 2, with Paul Merrison, Brian Rushworth, Tom Doughty and Tim Field extending the advantage to nearly 3mins at the finish line over North Belfast, with North Shields Poly taking third place.
Chester Le Street made it a double victory taking the Over 35 Womens' title. Clayton-le-Moors gained a healthy lead on the first two legs, over the Durham club's pair of Heather Robinson and Jenny Tinkler. However, Dianne Henaghan, taking over 38secs in arrears, passed her rival with 600m remaining, to come home with 21secs to spare. Henaghan's time was by far the quickest of the day. Elswick took third place, while in the Over 45 event, North Shields Poly led a clean sweep for the region's clubs.
Morpeth crossed the line in first place in the Mens' Over 50 event, but were disqualified due to the ineligibility of one of their runners. Les Atkinson, who ran the first leg, had the consolation of clocking the fastest time. An Elswick team consisting of four Over 55 athletes, were promoted from bronze to silver medals.

Tynedale Jelly Tea 10M Road Race.
Hexham to Ovingham.  Sun. 10th Sept.
Morpeth's Chris Simpson was a convincing winner of yesterday's Tynedale Jelly Tea 10M Road Race, from Hexham to Ovingham. 400 runners set offf in the testing hot conditions, with Sampson making his bid for victory after 2M. Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly making his debut over the distance, offered the only real challenge taking the lead briefly on several occasions. However, Sampson's experience told in the closing stages, as he pulled away to a 29secs victory. David Swinburne of Morpeth finished strongly to take third place. The race also incorporated the North Eastern Counties' A.A Championship, with the first three taking the medals. Previous winner, Ieuan Ellis was the leading veteran in 6th position. Elswick narrowly defeated Morpeth in the team competition.
Dianne Henaghan of Chester Le Street, competing over this distance for the first time in several years, won the Womens' race, finishing in 21st position overall. Henaghan, now in the Over 40 category, came home over 1 min ahead of previous winner, Judith Nutt of Elswick, with Bingley's Meryl Dodd finishing in 3rd place. Host club, Tynedale took the team title.
