Sunderland Harriers Centenary Year Open Cross Country Races.
Farringdon School.  Sat. 24th Sept.
Sunderland Harriers regained the Senior Mens' Relay title at their Centenary Cross Country races, at Farringdon School, on Saturday. In the glorious summer conditions, Gosforth winners in 2004, led on leg 1, through Paul Hutton, ahead of Elswick with Sunderland lying in third place. Mark Hood with the day's fastest time took Sunderland into a 2secs lead after leg 2. Patrick Martin and British Masters champion Brian Rushworth extended the advantage, with Sunderland crossing the finish line 51secs ahead of Morpeth, who had passed Gosforth on leg 3. The defending champions finished in a distant third position. The Wearsiders had won this event 12 times between 1990 and 2002, but had to settle for minor places in the last two years behind Morpeth (2003) and Gosforth.
Sunderland, even without Rushworth's services, retained the Veterans' title coming home well clear of North Shields Poly. Alyson Dixon of Chester Le Street comfortably won the Womens' race from current North of England Under 17 champion, Delyth James of Morpeth. Jarrow's Claire Simpson took third place. Tynedale's Stacey Smith, making a welcome return to competition after being sidelined during the summer season, comfortably won the Under 17 event. Gateshead's John Gibson proved to have the stronger finish defeating Morpeth's Robert Balmbra in the Under 17 Mens' race.
Laura Weightman of Morpeth, winner of last weekend's Tesco Junior Great North Run, was an easy winner of the Under 15 race. North Eastern Under 13 champion, Tristan Venus of Tynedale, moved up an age-group to take the corresponding Boys' event.
Steph Loraine reversed the minor placings in the Under 13 Tesco Great North Run, to defeat her great rival Amanda Watt of Chester Le Street. Scott Younger provided victory for the host club in the Under 13 Boys' race.
Aimee Green of Sunderland and Tristan Peel of Jarrow and Hebburn won the Under 11 races.

Additional Comments:  All info used. three-way split certainly helped regarding safety. weather bright, but cool breeze blowing. For U13 race I have used manual times, as chip-timing results showed most to be approx 8secs fast. Have used chip results for U17 race, but even these were 2-3secs fast. In this event, this system showed Balmbra to be second, as I think he did not start on front row. Have no idea on numbers but U13 event was best supported, even though they had the smallest age band. Surprisingly this was event that went out live on CBBC and included several "Byker Grove" cast members, most of whom would be much too old.. These included Sadie, Bradley, the twins, Kylie, Sarah (who got 4 A levels at Cramlington HS) and a tallish blonde girl with a cap, who I did not recognise. This supported the Great North Mile and 3000m races. Info on these + GNR itself, will appear in "Weekly Round-Up".

British Athletics League Qualifying Match.
Abingdon.  Sat. 10th Sept.
Gateshead Harriers became the second North East team to compete in the British Men's Athletics League, when winning Saturday's qualifying match at Abingdon. The Harriers under the excellent management of Kevin Flannery and Jeff Sturrock, were never headed after Kieran Flannery and Craig Crawford Glanville gained near maximum points in the opening event, the 400m Hurdles. Further victories from Chris Parr (1500m), Andrew Sturrock (110m Hurdles), Chris Boundy (Pole Vault), John Stacey (Long Jump), Craig Sturrock (Shot), Ian Burns (Javelin) and the sprint Relay squad, saw Gateshead comfortably defeat their nearest rivals, Basingstoke by 16pts.
Gateshead will compete in Division 4 next season, the region's previous British League club, Morpeth having been relegated 4 years ago.
In the qualifying competition for the UK Womens' League, a weakened Gateshead squad after a good start, faded to 6th. Leah Weatheritt and Kimberley Goodall were their top performers.

Additional Comments: Info originally e mailed from Chris Betts. Results courtesy of NYAL website. Several pb's from Gateshead team but no exact details. Gateshead 4 x 400 U15 Boys' team were disqualified and K Kelsall no jumped in LJ. Congratulations to the Tyneside club who will be looking to strengthen the U15 Girls and U13 Boys' squads in particular. Another good performance from my North East young athlete of the season, Nicola Pearson. Late news from Chris Betts is that Amee Welsh's throw in U13G Shot, puts her at the top in UK rankings.
