Weekly Round-up
(to 28th Sept).
Congratulations to Paul Tergat for bettering the world best time in the Berlin Marathon (28th Sept) in a time of 2hrs 4mins 55secs. This improved the old mark by 43secs. Sammy Korir was a (very) close second (2:04:56).
Former Gosforth Harrier, Sarah Maude helped Charnwood win the Midland 4 Stage Relay, at Sutton Coldfield (27th Sept). Her time was 15:29, running the third leg. Tara Krzywicki took over and clocked the fastest time of 14:28. At the Southern Mens' 6 Stage event, at Aldershot, David Anderson helped Belgrave take the title. His time on leg 4 was 18:00, with Aldershot's Chris Thompson, the fastest with 17:22 on leg 5.
Sonia O'Sullivan (Thames Valley) was the fastest in the Womens' event, with 12:03. Shaftesbury Barnet took the title.
Glen Stewart won the Great Adventure Trail Race at Loch Lomond (27th Sept) in 30:43. Kassa Tedesse was 2nd (30:53). with Stephen Hepples 3rd (31:10). I think R Balding was timekeeper !
Carley Wilson clocked the fastest time in the Civil Service Road Relay Championships at Finsbury Park (24th Sept). Her time on leg 2, for the winning Inland Revenue team, was 17:25.

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Birchwood Park, Warrington.  Sat. 27th Sept.
A strong Chester Le Street squad won the North of England 4 Stage Womens' Road Relay Championship, at Birchwood Park, Warrington on Saturday. The Riverside-based team, the reigning National Cross Country champions, gained victory by over a minute, adding to their 6 Stage title, won in April this year. Rurh Brown finished fifth on leg 1, with Kathryn Waugh dropping a place on the second stage. Morag McDonnell moved to the front on leg 3, with veteran Dianne Henaghan extending the advantage on the final stage. Henaghan's time was third fastest of the day, behind Salford's Bev Jenkins.
Darlington finished in a surprising 7th place, with Elswick (11th) and Morpeth (15th) making the first twenty.
The region did not fare so well in the Mens' 6 Stage race. Salford won the event for the third successive year, and were never headed after leg 2. Newcastle-based Neil Wilkinson ran the third leg (20:24). Only Morpeth took a top twenty place, with a weakened team, finishing 6th overall. The Northumberland squad reached the highest position of 4th after Terry Wall's fifth leg. Wall was Morpeth's fastest runner, despite running only 6 days after his efforts in the Great North Run. Elswick in a creditable 21st place, North Shields Poly (27th), and Border (28th) were the next of the region's teams, but no North East individual, clocked a top ten time. After Wilkinson, the second fastest of the region's athletes was Sunderland's Mark Hood who finished 4th on leg 1 ( 20:30). Sadly the Wearsiders, always good for a top ten placing, could only field two runners.
The next target of the leading teams is the National event at Sutton Coldfield, on 25th October.

Congratulations to Chester Le Street. They did also have half a B Team (Alyson Dixon 12:10 and H Stratford 14:11). Morpeth B splits were Lizzie Ranger 13:02, Rebecca Adams 13:53, Sarah Graham 13:22 and Nicola Duggan 13:35. Gateshead's splits were Philippa McCrea 12:41, Sally Youden 14:07, K Sargison 13:27 and Helen Patton 13:47. Jarrow and Hebburn could not raise team. Not sure which teams (Men and Women) actually qualify for Sutton Coldfield. Morpeth Mens' leg finishing positions were 14th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 4th and 6th. For Elswick Horn (20th), handed to Ellis who moved to 18th and McLeod, who took them to 8th. Ryan Stephenson lifted North Shields Poly from 31st to 24th. Other times included Simon O'Donnell (21:28) and Stewie Bell (21:21) (first two legs for Chester Le Street) and Rob Hand (21:23) for 2nd leg of incomplete Durham team. George Harden (23:31) dropped to 32nd on Sunderland's 2nd leg. According to Kevin Carr, it is the first time the Wearsiders have not finished a team in this event.

Weekly Round-up
(to 21st Sept).
Comgratulations to Paula on her world best time of 65mins 40 (39.56) secs in the Great North Run (21st Sept). In the perfect conditions (though it got windier and cooler after she finished) her winning time bettered the old non-ratified figures (by 3rd placed Susan Chepkemei) by 4secs, and the official mark by 1min 3secs. I gather that this may not be ratified as the difference between ground level "altitude" at start and finish, exceeds the allowable limit.
The course record (from Paula in 2000), was also broken by 1min 27secs. I feel very proud to have been the main timekeeper on both occasions, and this more than made up for the long wait for the Metro home (surprisingly most people in the queue, were not from the region).
Paula's 15km (46:41) and 10M (50:01) splits, were both unofficial world bests (the first by 16secs and latter by 53secs). Her mile splits were 5:00, 10:00, 15:05, 20:09, 25:15, 30:07, 35:07, 39:51, 45:09, 50:01, 55:16, 60:15 and 65:10 (est). Berhane Adere finished 2nd (67:32), Chepkemei 3rd (67:51), and Sonia O'Sullivan 4th (68:40). Leading North East placings were 17 Sheila Allen (80:25); 18 Judith Nutt (83:00) (she was last to be recorded in main funnel); 20 Alison Raw (85:25); 23 Denise Todd (84:27) and 29 Angela Dickie (89:21). (Please note: veteran categories not listed in results). Not sure if Ribeiro (7th in 72:10) is still worth an invite. Hannah Wootton I think, was first lady in main race in about 1hr 19mins.
Hendrick Ramaala repeated his 1997 victory in the Mens' race clocking 60mins 1sec. Jackson Koech was 2nd (60:05) with Segiy Lebid 3rd (61:49). I think course record of 59:58 might have gone, had winner kicked 100m earlier. Main splits here were 23:04 (5M) and 45:40 (10M). Mark Steinle was leading British athlete (7th in 62:55). Leading North East placings were 13 Mark Hudspith 65:26; 23 Andy Caine 67:11; 30 Terry Wall 69:13; 38 Micky Thompson 70:47; 42 Paul Lowe 71:01 and 43 Rob Hand 71:14.
Brendan clocked just inside 1hr 40mins. However, other minor placings are unavailable (at present) as a password is needed to obtain specific results. However, Scott and Colin McEntee clocked 1hr 48mins and George Routledge 2hrs 30mins (approx. times).
The GNR Miles were held before the heavy rain on the Saturday (20th Sept). Michael East won the Mens' event in a record time of 4mins 3.8secs, narrowly eadging out Silva. Sureyya Ayhan won Womens' event in a time of 4mins 30.7secs (another record) from Kelly Holmes (4:32.4) and Jo Pavey (4:34.8). Colin McCourt won Junior Mens' race (4:18.8) from Chris Parr (4:19.1), with Ryan McLeod 7th (4:22.9). Faye Fullerton was leading Junior lady (5:02.1), with Charlotte Browning 4th (5:07.8). Have no info at all on Friday's "Mile of Miles", but I understand Stan Long could have been fastest M70.
At the Swansea Bay 10km (21st Sept), victory went to Wilson Kogo (Kenya) in 29:08. Alan Shepherd finished 13th (33:09).
The Capital City Challenge 10km in Edinburgh was won by Glen Stewart (30:11) from Dominic Bannister (30:18).
John Moore was third in the Gorilla Fun Run in London (no further details).
Do not normally include Fell results, but I did receive advance info on Simonside Race on 20th Sept. Morgan Donnolly won in 45:18. Phil Lancaster was first M60 (60:32). Karen Robertson won Womens' race (52:44) from Alison Raw (54:56) and Nicola Duggan (a welcome return to racing) (57:45). Eileen Armstrong was first W60 (66:32).

BUPA Junior Great North Run.
Sat. 20th Sept.
Morpeth Harrier, Nathan Shrubb (16) from Seghill, won an exciting BUPA Junior Great North Run, on Saturday. In the wet conditions, 6000 competitors lined up on the course which covered the Quayside areas of Newcastle and Gateshead. Martin Wilson of Jarrow and Hebburn, along with Blaydon's Alex Muir forced the early pace, before they were joined by Shrubb and Lewis Moses of Newton Aycliffe at the Mile point. Muir soon dropped back and a mile later, Moses began to lose contact. Shrubb opened up a gap of 20m on his rival, but Wilson was able to pull it back, and the pair were locked together with half-a-mile remaining. Shrubb made another bid for victory approaching the Millennium  Bridge in the final 400m, and this time it was decisive. Shrubb, a former North of England Cross Country champion, at Under 13 level, came home with 4 secs to spare over Wilson. Moses in third place ensured 16-year-olds took the main prizes, with Simon Watson (15) of Gateshead finishing 4th. Chloe Rodham (16) from Cumbria, comfortably won the Girls' race finishing 43rd in the 6000-strong field. This was the first major victory for Rodham, 5th in 2002, although she is a regular member of her county's Cross Country team. Gateshead's Mary Ferrier (15) as in 2002, finished in second position, while third place went to 12-year-old Eilish McColgan from Dundee, daughter of 1991 World 10,000m champion, Liz. However this result was touched with a little controversy, as she was allowed to start at the front of the field, and was accompanied by her mother round the course. Result.  Distance 3M.
1 N Shrubb (Morp) 15:20; 2 M Wilson (J&H) 15:24; 3 L Moses (N Ayc) 15:39; 4 S Watson (Gate) 15:48; 5 A Duffield (Loft) 15:49; 6 S Desport 15:58; 7 S Hall (Gate) 16:00; 8 J Young (Morp) 16:03; 9 K Flannery (Gate) 16:05; 10 J Creegan (Gate) 16:15; 11 J Martin (Sun) 16:22; 12 A Russell 16:25; 13 A Muir (Blay) 16:28; 14 C Robinson 16:29; 15 P Graves 16:29; 16 R Campbell 16:33; 17 R Cunningham (Birt) 16:38; 18 K Thompson (Shil) 16:57; 19 C Kerr 17:02; 20 N Robinson 17:04; 21 P Fitzpatrick (R&Z) 17:10; 22 D Gale 17:14; 23 Z Scott (Birt) 17:16; 24 K Bell 17:18; 25 S Brewis (H&P) 17:18

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 22nd September 2003).

Additional Comments: Report edited, including reference to McColgan's "pacemaking" (this was also edited by AW). Competitors were allocated pens for ages, which meant she should have started some 50m behind start line. To be fair she would have been third on merit, anyway. Nova and CBBC need to confirm whether this is race + Fun run, or just Fun Run. Some "elite" runners had no info on how to enter, and were refused late entries. Still think event was better (and more manageable) at the International Stadium (earlier start the better. Start time now 3.00pm too late). Think CBBC involvement has been retrogade step, to serious run aspect. Good job race was just sort of 5km, instead of advertised 4km. If it had been latter, leaders would have been trying to finish, when tail-enders were blocking run-in having just started (took 13mins to clear start line).
Race progress from CBBC coverage, which was dreadful. They only acknowledged first girl. Weather was damp early on but rain gradually got heavier (and heavier) during afternoon. S Quee runs for LVAC (not sure what club that is ?), and Wadsworth runs for Buxton (info from P Mulholland). R Campbell is son of Alistair (MP). This info courtesy of GNR TV coverage. Only first 160 results available, hence only 16 girls. Sorry not to see the awesome Emily Pidgeon defend her title. Without any advance knowledge of who was running, I thought Emily along with Sam Crowe and Julia Orr, would have been main contenders, but all were absent. I did however tip Nathan Shrubb and Lewis Moses (along with Jonathon Young) as main male contestants. Winner is distant relation to Alf (info from Mike Bateman) and is coached by Tony Ward. Runner-up is under guidance of Bill Wilson.
Did not see any younger "Byker Grove" cast, but Ben (Andrew Hayden Smith) presented CBBC coverage, and youth leader (the one from "Dream Team" and relation of Robson Green), was the leader of "red team".

Sunderland Harriers Open Cross Country Races.
Farringdon School.  Sat. 13th Sept.
Morpeth Harriers were emphatic winners of the Senior Mens' Relay, at Saturday's  Sunderland Harriers Cross Country promotion, at Farringdon School. In weather which is more associated with the track and field season, Shaun Moralee led for Durham on leg 1, ahead of Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street and Tim Field of Sunderland. New-signing, Nick McCormick took over for Morpeth in 7th place, and came home with a 15secs advantage over his rivals after leg 2.. .
Dan Samuels, the Civil Service 1500m champion, extended the lead to over a minute on leg 3, his time only being bettered by McCormick. Ben Harrison increased the advantage to over 3mins at the finish line, with Gosforth taking second place ahead of Sunderland. The Wearsiders had won this event 13 times in the last 14 years, their run only being interrupted by Morpeth in 1999. In front of Gosforth were the first two veterans teams, Durham City and Sunderland. Durham led after leg 2, when Rob Hand moved up from 3rd position. A second faster than Hand, was Tom Doughty, who ran the third leg for Sunderland.
Lewis Timmins of Gosforth comfortably won the Under 17 event, with Elswick's Jonathon Pearson gaining victory in the Under 15 race.
Former Salford Harrier, Sarah Wilkinson, now with Chester Le Street, easily won the Womens' race, from leading Junior, Rosie Smith of Durham. Third across the line was the first Under 17 athlete, Delyth James of Morpeth. Vicky Angus of Houghton and Peterlee, won the Under 15 race, while Emma Spoor provided a victory for the host club in the Under 13 event.

Additional Comments: Most of report used, but results of U13 and U11 Girls omitted. Warm sunny day but breezy. Long grass in parts which had referee Bill McGuirk concerned about youngsters' races. Sign of times that veterans' teams were 2nd and 3rd across line. Sunderland Seniors were weakened as several of their younger athletes were in a "rest period". Brian Rushworth cried off that morning, through illness.

Re: Kielder: 194 advance entries (probably over 200 finishers). Weather warm and sunny. Very beautiful scenery (first time I have been here), but do not like approach roads. Start 15mins walk from finish. Course very hard judging by times (these are unofficial). Probably will never see full result. Overall standard not good: I think 50mins would have been good enough to secure position in first 100. Only recognised about 30 of the competitors. Other performances included (no placings): Archie Jenkins 40:30 (8th?): Lynne Marr 46:45 (5th Lady); Eric Appleby 48:47; Ron Stewart 49:27; Bill McNeil 49:55; Kath Stewart 55:20.
