Derwentside 10M Road Race.
Stanley.  Sun. 29th Sept.
2001 World Championship 5000m representative, Michael Openshaw was an easy winner of yesterday's Derwentside 10M Road Race. The former Chester le Street athlete, now running for Birchfield, was content to allow the host club's John Donneky to lead for the opening downhill Mile, but along with 2001 winner, Stewie Bell of Chester Le Street, soon pulled away. Openshaw dropped his rival approaching 3M, and was 20m clear at this stage. Passing halfway in 27:24, Openshaw, the 2001 National Cross Country champion, was extending his advantage all the time, and was nearly 3 minutes ahead at the finish. The runner-up was having his second outing in less than 24 hours, having ran an excellent fourth leg for his club, in the Northern Road Relay, the previous day. Ken Maynard of Sunderland Strollers finished in a distant third position, on the course which is ranked as one of the toughest, in the country. Sue Laws of Derwentside won a much tighter Womens' contest, defeating Sue Milburn of Newton Aycliffe by 10 secs. Shirley Atkinson of Heaton finished third.

Patrick Martin and Mark Hood extended the advantage, with the Wearsiders defeating runners-up Gosforth by 52secs. In a field that consisted mainly of runners over 30, it was good to see that five members of the first two teams, were Juniors. North Shields Poly came home in third place, while Terry Wall of Morpeth clocked the day's fastest time on Leg 2, moving his club from 8th to 3rd position..
Sunderland also won the Veterans' Relay, with Rob Hand, the National champion over Cross country and 10km, clocking the fastest time on the opening leg.

Additional Comments: Report edited slightly. Weather sunny, warm and bright with light breeze. Not good turn-out in Relay with 16 Senior and 6 Veterans' teams closing in. Clash with Tyne-Wear Derby most likely factor. Morpeth struggled to raise a team. Gareth Driscoll, who was drafted in (he was also 9th in Under 17 race), was followed by Wall, Chris Dentice, and Bob Driscoll. Apparently, the main team were running as guests in the Yorkshire Relays (as a trial for Northern event), but they were struggling, as Ben Groves was called up the last minute. Chris Lamb ran two legs for Chester Le Street, who crossed the line in 7th position, but were disqualified. John Orange was another to run two legs. Unplaced Veterans in Womens' race (there were none designated), included Gillian Butler (15th in 12:54) and Kelly Bentley (16th in 13:19). Heaton were represented by three runners. Eric Appleby was 10th on Leg 1, in Veterans' Relay (13:58) (ahead of Aurora B), and in Womens' race, Kelly McEntee was 19th (13:30) and Ann Grenfell was 23rd (14:10). These placings ignoring Under 17 age-group (incorporated with Seniors).

Tynedale Jelly Tea 10M Road Race.
Hexham to Ovingham.  Sun. 15th Sept.
David Wardle made a welcome return to his native North East, to easily win yesterday's 14th Tynedale Jelly Tea Road Race, which followed a course from Hexham to Ovingham. In the extremely hot conditions, the former Chester Le Street athlete, now running in the colours of London Irish, dropped his main rivals after the first Mile (5:00), and passing the halfway point in 25:40, extended his advantage to a massive 2mins 41secs over Morpeth veteran, Les Atkinson. Blyth's Andy Brown finished strongly to finish in a distant third position. Former International, Jill Boltz of Blaydon, having her first outing since the Blaydon race in June, finished in a magnificent 11th position. Boltz, now a veteran,  was over 4 mins ahead of Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee, who had won the event in 2000 and 2001. Karen Robertson of the host club, took third place.
Result.
1 D Wardle (London Irish) 52:05; 2 L Atkinson (Morp, M45) 54:46; 3 A Brown (Blyth) 57:42; 4 M Slesser (J&H) 57:55; 5 P Walker (Blay) 58:01; 6 D Anderson (Walls, M45) 58:10; 7 I Harding (Morp) 58:16; 8 C Henderson (Morp) 58:22; 9 J Bell (Els, M55) 58:31; 10 S Smith (Salt) 58:55; 11 Jill Boltz (Blay, W35) 59:01; 12 M Connelly ((Els) 59:14; 13 M Jones (S Sh) 59:27; 14 G Dixon (Morp, M40) 59:43; 15 S Clark (NSP, M40) 60:00  Further Veterans: M50 - C Dentice (Morp) 60:28  M60 - P Winter (Morp) 73:07  M65 - B Cordes (Morp) 68:58  Teams: 1 Morpeth 22; 2 Blyth 35; 3 Derwentside 60  Veterans: 1 Morpeth 11; 2 South Shields 27; 3 Elswick 39
Women: 1 Boltz 59:01; 2 S Allen (H&P, W45) 63:15; 3 K Robertson (Tyne) 64:26; 4 A Dickinson (NSP, W35) 69:28; 5 Y Swinhoe (Els, W45) 70:14; 6 C Benson (unatt) 70:51; 7 L Walker (Walls) 71:48; 8 C Young (Blyth, W45) 71:57; 9 A Adams (CleS, W45) 72:58; 10 L Miller (NSP, W45) 73:15  Further Veterans: W50 - S Greener (Blyth) 77:30  W55 - P Gold (Heat) 80:07  W60 - K Stewart (NSP) 79:51  Teams: 1 Blyth 18; 2 Heaton 28  Veterans: 1 North Shields Poly 26; 2 Heaton 37; 3 Blyth 39
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 16th Sept 2002).

Additional Comments: All info used. Race started at 2.45 (15 mins late), due to more competitors wanting to get from Ovingham, than bus run allowed. 261 finishers. Would rather this race was held on Saturday or Sunday morning. It is too much of a rush on Sunday afternoon for many people. David Wardle rushed off after race to catch train to London. Outside of first fifteen was Paul Johnson, who suffered (like many others) in the conditions after being in the leading/chasing group for 3M. Ted Joynson started 10 mins before main field (accompanied by "sweeper up"), but was still well behind anyone else (2:39:09). As usual, having seperate team for Seniors and Veterans caused problems. In womens' race Heaton were second Senior team (only two finished but first three due prizes), but Veterans were also second (only one prize), but all counters were ahead of Seniors ! Not helped as original team result was calculated on four counters, which gave a completely different result. Heaton fielded 15 runners. First counter was Ian Legge (44th in 66:38). First lady was Anita Nott (113th in 75:16), who was actually first W40 ! Shirley Atkinson (75:48) and Pam Gold were other veteran counters. Senior counters were Ann Grenfell (80:17), Kelly McEntee (80:44) and (a welcome return of) Michelle Landells (92:50).

The North East won two of the three categories at the North of England Mens' Inter Counties Track and Field Campionships, at Cudworth near Barnsley on Saturday. The region took the Under 15 and Under 17 trophies but with a severely depleted Senior team, they had to settle for third place overall behind Yorkshire and Merseyside.

Robinsons Furniture Company Berwick Walls Races.
Sun. 8th Sept.
Sunderland Harrier, Mark Hood returned to winning form at yesterday's Robinsons Furniture Company sponsored Berwick Walls Multi Terrain event. The course was changed this year, from the old five laps of the Berwick Walls, a move that appeared popular as a total of 100 competitors took part, though the new route proved very difficult. Hood, the 2001 North East 10km Road champion, had been sidelined with injury, which curtailed a promising start to the track season. After a couple of low-key outings, Hood was back to his best form, narrowly defeating clubmate and early leader, Lee Browell. Chris Sampson of Morpeth was close behind in third place. Les Atkinson of Morpeth was the leading veteran in fourth position, taking this award for the sixth consecutive year. Scottish Commonwealth Games 10000m representative, Hayley Owens of Edinburgh Woollen Mill, won the Womens' race finishing in 20th position overall. Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee, in her first race in the Over 45 category, took second place ahead of last year's winner, Angela Hunter of Jarrow and Hebburn. Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly and Sam Crowe of Elswick, were the fastest competitors in the supporting Young Athletes races.

Additional Comments: All used apart from reference to Senior Womens' winner. 98 finishers in Senior event. Waited "an eternity" for results. Allen Mulliss was 51st in 47:05 and Eric Appleby was 66th (actually first Over 60). Course generally not popular (only Eric seemed to think ok). Many thought over-distance (strongly denied by organisers), but very hard. Nice to see "Come on Amanda" back with good run. She won here from 1995 - 1999. Judith Nutt was third lady afteer first mile (bottom of main hill). At this point Lee Browell at 30m lead over Hood. Young athletes races ran as one for Boys and Girls. Allowed half an hour for each which meant 15 - 20 minute gaps. Perhaps Under 15/17 ccould have covered two laps ? Did not realise Laura Wright had joined Gateshead. Sponsor is former top athlete, Tony Robinson.

Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 5th September 2002.

Additional Comments: Not used on day, but report only on 6th (Friday). Will resubmit results for Monday (9th). For a first (and only ) time, all competitors on night have been listed, so entry not great, but better than in 2001. Only two races. Ideal conditions, warm evening with little wind. Ian Barnes was probably best performer. Archie went off fast from start and kept going. Eric went through 3kn in 12:36, and just missed lapping runner-up. Luckily Ted J, who rang up two days earlier for entry, did not turn up. In throwing events, Shot was cancelled due to darkness. In fact Hammer, should not have taken place for this reason. These events should have started earlier. Brian Kirkley was in attendance. Brought "exclusive" news that Jared Deacon has resigned from Border, and rejoined South Shields.

I was under impression, Gateshead's girls qualified for one of Finals, but they were not listed in results. Middlesbrough (Mandale) finished in 5th in B Final. Their best performers were Yusuf Aliu who gained a sprint double at Under 13 level (12.18 and 25.18), and John Taylor who won Under 15 1500m (4:22.70).
