Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League Sherman Cup and Davison Shield.
Temple Park, South Shields.  Sat. 28th Oct.
Morpeth Harriers won both the Sherman Cup and Davison Shield for the third successive year, at Saturday's opening fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League at Temple Park, South Shields.
In the Mens' Sherman Cup competition, Morpeth finished well ahead of Gateshead with Sunderland taking 3rd place. Ironically Morpeth won the none of the team events in any of the four male races, for which the strongest team overall takes the trophy. Ryan Stephenson gained a comfortable victory in the Senior Mens' event leading North Shields Poly to the team title. Stephenson dropped his main rival, Matthew Nicholson of Gosforth after the first of the three laps, with Durham's Jonathan Powell finishing in an isolated third position. Morpeth finished 2nd in the team event, led by 4th placed Neil Wilkinson. The Northumberland club finished 2nd in the Under 17 Mens' and Under 15 Boys' team races and 3rd in the Under 13 age-group. Gateshead gained a clean sweep in the Under 17 Mens' race, with Schools' International Ross Murray opening his season, with an easy victory. Tynedale, who finished a creditable 4th overall, got off to a good start, with individual victories from Josh Brown (Under 13) and Tristan Venus (Under 15). They also won the Under 13 team event and were third behind Sunderland in the Under 15 race.
Morpeth, however were unchallenged in taking the corresponding Womens' trophy, the Davison Shield. They were the only club to finish in a team in each of the age-groups, the second place going to Tynedale, who closed in 3 teams.
Performance of the day came from Durham University student, Felicity Milton, who won the Senior Womens' race by over 2mins. Milton, from Lincoln, and running in the Durham City colours, has returned to athletics this autumn after 6 years of playing hockey. She led from the start, withholding the early challenge of Chester Le Street's Claire Simpson, and pulling well clear of her rival on the second of the 2 laps. Another Chester Le Street athlete, Tracy Laws finished strongly to take third place.
Morpeth took the team event and were also successful in the Under 13 and Junior events. They also provided the individual winners, Hannah Rank and British Schools 1500m champion, Laura Weightman respectively. The latter gained a hard earned victory,  overcoming a strong challenge from Blaydon's Helen Gertig. Gateshead won the Under 15 event, and also provided the individual winner, Sigourney Bell. A weakened Morpeth team finished 4th.

Additional Comments: most of info used. Weather dry and quite mild. Heavy underfoot in parts but not in start/finish areas. A bit breezy. Turn-out better than normal but not great. I don't think scratch Cross Country races (apart from Championships) attract big fields. Thanks to Hugh and Steph Bingham for results. 168 finishers SM (last time: 55:54), 46 SW (34:42). Good to Shonagh Smith back in action. Unfortunately, I think Stacey may have retired, though I understand only temporarily. Other performances included: SM: 30 Jim Bell 34:54; 47 A Jenkins 36:17  SW: 21 L Walker 27:39; 25 G Barry 28:00; 29 L Marr 28:54  JW: 18 R Pottinger 29:06.
Heaton performances were: SM: 36 D Robins 35:10; 73 M Gibson 37:46; 96 S McEntee 39:08; 116 J Gibson 40:33; 133 E Baty 42:03; 137 C Burn 43:14; 168 G Routledge 55:54  17th team (205). Not a great turn-out, but not club Championships and nothing really to play for. HA and FT currently injured, but thought a Womens' team might have defended title !

Nichol Hunter Metrocentre Cross Country Relays.
Shibdon Pond, Blaydon.  Sun. 15th Oct.
North Shields Poly won the main event for Senior Men at yesterday's Nichol Hunter Memorial Cross Country Relays Meeting, at Shibdon Pond, Blaydon.
Durham led on the first leg, with Shaun Moralee clocking the fastest time. Rob Walker lifted the Poly from 4th to 1st on leg 2, before Ryan Stephenson stretched the advantage on the final leg to 41secs, over runners-up, Morpeth. Stephenson's time was a mere 1secs slower than Moralee. Gateshead finished in third place. Sunderland won the Veterans' event for the third successive year. Durham's Ian Crampton had a 4secs on George Harden on leg 1, but Brian Rushworth put the issue beyond doubt on leg 2 for the Wearsiders, clocking the fastest time. Tim Field increased the advantage on the final leg to 2mins 19secs.
Chester Le Street led throughout to win the Senior Womens' race. Kathryn Waugh, Jenny Tinkler and Dianne Henaghan with the day's fastest time, came home 1min 39secs ahead of a young Morpeth squad, with Gateshead finishing in 3rd place.
The most exciting races of the day came in the Under 15 age-group. In the Girls' event, Sigourney Bell lifted Gateshead from 6th to 1st on the final leg, overhauling Gosforth in the final 50m. However, Bell's time was bettered by English Schools' champion, Kate Avery, who lifted the incomplete Shildon team from 8th to 2nd on leg 2.
In the Boys' race, Tristan Venus of Tynedale, moved his club from 4th to 1st on the final leg, only catching long-time leaders Gosforth (who were later disqualified) with 30m remaining.
Tynedale were also runaway winners of the Under Boys' event. Morpeth were untroubled in winning the Under 17 Mens' and Under 13 Girls' races.

Derwentside 10M
Stanley, Co.Durham.  Sun. 8th Oct.
Darren Purvis of Chester Le Street strode to a comfortable victory in yesterday's 21st anniversary Derwentside 10M Multi Terrain event at Stanley. In the bright but breezy conditions, Purvis, who had finished third for the previous three years, soon headed the field, fighting off the challenge of Sunderand's Steve Potts, the winner in 2004 and 2005, on the tough hilly course. The margin of victory was 19secs. Mark Smith finished strongly to take third place and was also the leading veteran. Sunderland retained the team title.
Louise Noble of Sunderland, who finished 25th in last weekend's BUPA Great North Run, took over 4mins off the old course record to win the Womens' race. Noble finished in 11th place overall. Tynedale's Steph Scott was the leading veteran in 2nd place ahead of Darlington's Linda Noble. Sunderland also took the Womens' team awards.

Additional Comments:  All info used. However this was rang up to copy, as I could not send e mails due to "server" maintenance. Nice day until stragglers came in when it clouded over, got cold and windy and started raining. 113 finishers (last time: Ted Joynson 2:21:00). Ted started 10mins early, but this time (taken by "minder"), seemed very "fast" for 10M.
Apologies to a Blaydon lady, who finished about 8th but not included in results. No one to check with who she was ? , at presentation. Also Bill McNeil not listed in results. Time used is approximate. The poor entry for Vets NE Champs, meant Allen Mulliss added the M45 10M title, to the 5M, gained a week earlier. Also George Routledge retained the M55 title, ahead of David Tait. Harry Craven was probably 2nd M70.  Organisers are going to seek a new course for 2007, due to excessive costs for Road closures.
Other results included: 60 J Prudham; 72 F Strand; 74 M Stephenson 84:00; 86 D Whitmore 88:13; 99 J Loughran 95:07; 110 D Tait 2:05:37.  Heaton performances were: 31 J Gibson 72:02; 45 A Mulliss 76:39; 106 G Routledge 1:44:10; 109 H Craven 1:54:02.
