Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Riverside, Chester Le Street. Sun. 30th Oct.
Sunderland Harriers continued where they left off last season, by winning
the Senior Men's team event, at the opening fixture of the Start Fitness
North Eastern Harrier League, at the Riverside, Chester Le Street, yesterday.
The defending champions comfortably held off the challenge of Durham City
and Morpeth. The Wearsiders lost out on the individual event when track
specialist Shaun Moralee of Durham, proved too strong for North Eastern
Junior champion, Patrick Martin in the final sprint. In a distant third
place was Mark Hood of Sunderland. Running from the medium pack, Hood also
clocked the fastest time. Quickest from the fast pack was Elswick's Ryan
McLeod, who moved through the 300-strong field into 19th position.
Emma Waterhouse of Chester Le Street, comfortably won the Senior Womens'
race from top veterans, Karen Robertson of Tynedale and Caroline Ratcliff
of Durham. Gateshead's Philipa McCrea, who finished 4th clocked the fastest
time. Heaton took the team honours, from Gateshead and Sunderland. There
was a particularly large turn-out of 75 competitors in this event.
Quickest lady of the day, however was Morpeth's Delyth James, who moved
through to 4th in the Junior Womens' race over the same course. Tynedale's
Stacey Smith was the individual winner.
Carl Smith of Chester Le Street (Under 17 Men), Ross Murray of Gateshead
(Under 15 Boys), Kate Avery of Shildon (Under 15 Girls) and Steph Loraine
of Birtley (Under 13 Girls) won their respective events from the slow pack
and also clocked the fastest times. Philip Hope of Sunderland won the Under
13 Boys' race, with 11th placed Jamie Robson of Gateshead clocking the
fastest time.

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Sat. 22nd Oct.
Morpeth Harriers took the silver medals at Saturday's National 6 Stage
Road Relay Championship at a bright and dry Sutton Park, while 4th leg
runner, Nick McCormick clocked by far, the fastest time. At the halfway
point, Morpeth were in 28th place, over 3mins behind the then-leaders Altrincham,
and looked certain to be out of the medals. Tom Ranger (23rd), Chris Sampson
(34th) and Michael Morris were the early runners, before McCormick took
over. The Commonwealth Games-bound 1500m representative, worked his way
through the field to 10th position, his time of 16mins 41secs, being the
third fastest ever, on the current course. McCormick's time was 20secs
quicker than Birchfield Kenyan Wilfred Taragon, with course record holder
Chris Davies (Telford) another 5secs slower. Neil Wilkinson had an excellent
run, to move up to 4th on leg 5, with the third placed team Altrincham
now in sight. However, Ian Hudspith, raised the Northumbrians expectations
on leg 6, as he overhauled both Altrincham and Newham & Essex Beagles,
who looked a safe second before the final leg.
Belgrave won the event for the fifth successive year, coming home 78secs
ahead of Morpeth. Fast finishing Midland champions, Notts AC took third
place. B teams were allowed in the event for the first time and Morpeth's
second string squad finished in 27th place, the first B team to finish.
Gateshead (39th) and Chester Le Street (50th) were the region's other representatives.
In the Womens' 4 Stage race, Chester Le Street finished in a creditable
8th position. with the line-up of Alyson Dixon (8th), Steph Robson (9th),
Sarah Wilkinson (7th) and Kathryn Waugh. The B team finished 36th with
Gateshead in 58th. Morpeth were expected to field a strong team, but had
to return home, when Jane Mooney, their car driver, was taken ill.
Bristol retained their title with Kate Reed overhauling log-time leaders,
Shaftesbury Barnet on the final leg and also clocking the fastest time.
Bedford, who were expected to have the spectating-Paula Radcliffe in the
line-up, finished 3rd.

on parts of course. Chris Lamb looked to be injured when handing over.

to 56secs at the finish line over Sunderland, with Elswick taking third
place. Elswick's final leg runner, Ryan McLeod was second fastest overall.
Sunderland retained the Veterans' title. Tim Field moved them from 5th
to 1st on leg 2. Paul Merrison held the lead for Wallsend on leg 1, his
time only being bettered by Field on the day.
Morpeth Harriers easily won the Senior Womens' event. They led all
the way, with Delyth James, the North of England Under 17 champion, clocking
the fastest time on leg 1. Danielle Watts and Rachel Adams extended the
lead to 89secs over Tynedale, who held 2nd place throughout, with a Gateshead
Under 17 squad taking third place.
Morpeth also won the Under 15 Girls' race, with Laura Weightman on
leg 3, clocking the fastest time.
The prizes were distributed quite evenly amongst the region's stronger
clubs.
Gateshead won two events (Under 15 Boys and Under 13 Girls), Chester
Le Street gained victory in the Under 17 Mens' race, with Sunderland winning
the Under 13 Boys' event.

23 Senior Mens' teams closed in, 18 (Veteran) and 14 (Senior Women). Younger
races U13/U15 ran 2 mins apart, which speeded up programme. I understand
Senior /U17 Men ran a slightly longer course due to marshalling error.
Jimmy Bell ran two legs (No. 3 for Elswick B in 15:44 and 3 for Elswick
Vets in a lot faster 12:56). Archie Jenkins pulled up injured on leg 3,
when Morpeth were lying 4th in Vets' event.

Derwentside 10M Multi Terrain
Stanley. Sun. 9th Oct.
Sunderland Harrier Steven Potts repeated his 2004 victory in yesterday's
Derwentside 10M event. On the new Multi Terrain course used for the first
time last year, Potts bettered his inaugural course best time by 13secs.
In the bright but cool and breezy conditions, Potts soon headed the record
field of 170 runners, pulling away to a 500m victory over Quakers' Alasdair
Tatham. Darren Purvis of Chester Le Street took third place for the third
succesive year. Former Gateshead Harrier and North of England 10M champion,
Mark Smith was the leading veteran in 4th position. As expected Sunderland
retained the team title.
Tracy Laws of Chester Le Street won the Womens' race.for the third
successive year. Laws who was wearing the host club's colours when winning
in 2003 and 2004, came home in 42nd position, just over a minute ahead
of clubmate Dawn Elliott, who had the consolation of taking the Veterans'
trophy. Joanne Dooley was close behind in third. Claremont won the team
title, which was being contested for the first time.

George Routledge and David Tait, were M55 gold and silver medallists. Christine
Courtney (115th) was sole lady. Other placings included: 112 F Strand 78:41;
121 M Stephenson 80:33; 128 G Urron 81:54 and 137 D Whitmore. Apologies

listed as W35. Oldest men were M65+. Congratulations to host club for an
excellent results service. Other Heaton performances were: 34 J Wilson

Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10km Road Race.
Acklam, Middlebrough. Sun. 2nd Oct.
Morpeth Harrier, Martin Scaife was an emphatic winner of yesterday's
inaugural Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10km Road Race, which started and finished
in the Acklam area. Over 1400 runners lined up under ideal conditions on
a fast flat course. Scaife from nearby Norton, pulled away from his main
rival, Stephen Hepples of Newham, with 2km remaining. The margin of
victory was 48secs, while nearly another minute adrift in 3rd place was
Stewy Bell of Chester Le Street. Martin Grainger of Darlington was the
leading veteran in 7th position.
Darlington's Bernadette Taylor who crossed the line in an excellent
20th place, was an easy winner of the Womens' race. Improving Sunderland
Harrier, Louise Noble took second ahead of Kerry Matthew of Chester Le

1430 finishers (last time: 1:45:36). A good event which organisers would
be better to stick to this distance, rather than "match" GNR with Half
Marathon. Starting area could have been wider, but I think was kept narrow
to allow emergency vehicles through. Will not comment on "chip" timing,
but all my "split" times (including first six men and first three women),
agreed with these. Unable to work Womens' teams out on day, but I understand
Darlington narrowly defeated Sunderland. George Routledge had a better
run, finishing 913th in 56:42 (actually 55:21 as he took while to reach
starting line).

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Stanley Park, Blackpool. Sat. 1st Oct.
Morpeth Harriers successfully defended their title at Saturday's North
of England Six Stage Road Relay Championship, at Stanley Park, Blackpool.
The Northumberland club were never headed after leg 2, when Neil Wilkinson
moved up three places after Tom Ranger's opening leg. Michael Morris maintained
the advantage on leg 3, before Nick McCormick, having his first outing
since the World Championship 1500m heat at Helsinki, put the issue beyond
doubt, clocking the day's fastest time on leg 4. John Mooney and Ian Hudspith
brought Morpeth home nearly 2mins ahead of Altrincham, with Trafford taking
the bronze medals. For good measure Morpeth also took the awards for the
first B team, finishing in 12th place overall. Gateshead finished in a
creditable 10th position, with Chester Le Street in 13th. The pair join
Morpeth at the National Championship at Sutton Coldfield on 22nd October.
Chester Le Street, champions in 2003, finished 3rd in the Womens' 4
Stage event. Alyson Dixon led for the Durham club on leg 1, clocking the
second fastest overall time. Kathryn Waugh (2nd), Angie Watson (3rd) and
Steph Robson maintained the medal position. Their B team (18th) and Morpeth
(11th) both gained top twenty positions.
