Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Shibdon Pond, Blaydon.  Sun. 26th Nov.
Sunderland Harriers suffered a setback to the defence of their Senior Mens' title, finishing 4th in the opening fixture of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League at Shibdon Park, Blaydon, yesterday. The Wearsiders did provide the individual winner, with Brian Rushworth gaining a comfortable victory, running from the medium pack. Rushworth giving 2mins 30secs to most of the field, ran alongside Morpeth's Mark Brown for most of the way, before pulling away on the final lap. Tommy Brannon of North Shields Poly, who held a comfortable lead after two of the three laps, finishedi in third place. With the medium pack boasting an usually high quality, the five fastest times came from that group of runners. In a highly competitive team event, Wallsend won the Division 1 contest on countback frrom Durham, with Alnwick in third place. Sunderland Strollers and Chester Le Street were successful in the other divisions.
Scottish International, Freya Murray, running in the colours of her new club, Chester Le Street, clocked the fastest time in the Senior Womens' event. Running from the fast pack, Murray finished in 2nd place, behind her sister, Keira Jane, who was running for Newcastle University. Jayne Goble of North Shields Poly finished 3rd. Chester Le Street took the team title from defending champions, Elvet Striders.
Most impressive performance of the day came from Morpeth's Laura Weightman who won the Junior Womens' race, by over a minute. Running the same course as the Seniors, Weightman, who is in the Under 17 age-group, clocked a time, which was was only bettered on the day by Murray.
Shildon's Kate Avery was fastest in the Under 15 race, finishing 3rd behind Tynedale's Shonagh Smith.
Ross Murray of Gateshead, who like Weightman and Avery has gained Schools International vests, also finished 3rd from the fast pack, in the Under 17 Mens' race. Shildon's Cameron Boyek was easily the fastest in the Under 13 age-group, finishing in 10th place overall.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used.  Weather, damp in morning but fared up for races. Overcast but quite mild. Little wind. 262 finishers in SM (last time: 52:42), SW (74) (30:59). Brannon held 40secs lead over Brown/Rushworth, who were lying 5th and 6th with one lap remaining. Rushworth passed Brannon on "hill" section, while Brown overhauled him with 100m remaining. Tom Doughty was first fast pack runner in 38th position, closely followed by Stewy Bell (30:07) and Ian Twaddle (30:13). Dave Kirkland missed start (off 6:05) and finished 94th (30:33). Sadly only 17 finishers in U17M race, with an excellent turn-out of 26 (JW). Big news is that Tim Field (actually his wife) is expecting their first child, and his appearances might be restricted this winter.
Teams were listed on overall performance (results courtesy of Hugh/Steph Bingham). Sunderland H finished behind Strollers and Blyth. On looking at race it was difficult to predict a team winner, but I thought the champions, might still have won it.. Slightly surprising winners, as I understand they have a lot of Newcastle United fans, and they were playing at the same time (Newcastle 1 Portsmouth 0). Heaton finished 21st and B team (31st). In Division 2 they finished 6th (793) (since elevated to 5th). Other placings in Division were: 4 Tynedale 700; 5 Elvet Striders 792 (only one point ahead) (but later demoted); 7 Houghton & Peterlee 806; 8 Derwentside 1000; 9 Aurora 1334. Jarrow & Hebburn dnf (Joe Prudham like George Routledge would be running in Benidome).  Performances not listed above were: 92 M Gibson 36:31; 113 J Moore 32:23; 134 A Ball 37:57; 143 P Bhogal 38:14; 152 J Gibson 38:24; 159 S McEntee 38:39; 186 C McEntee 39:58; 187 A Smith 40:01; 196 E Baty 40:24; 201 I McKinnon 40:35; 209 C Burn 41:02; 214 D Wright 41:42; 223 D Brignall 42:20; 226 L Wilkinson 42:24  SW: 20 H Astley 22:08; 22 J Zhoppi 22:11; 62 R Gourley 24:34  JW: 14 J Brignell 22:46 (6th U20).

Brampton to Carlisle 10M Road Race.
Sat. 18th Nov.
Liverpool Harrier, John McCole sprinted to victory in the 58th running of Saturday's Wm Coulthard & Co Ltd sponsored, Brampton to Carlisle Road Race. McCole, together with several team mates, was staying in the Lake District for the stag party of Bernie Murray, who was second veteran overall. McCole soon headed the 600-strong field and was closely shadowed by Jamie Reid (Cambuslang), Hwyel Care (York), Michael Scott (Border) and David Kirkland (Alnwick), this group breaking away after a slower than usual opening Mile (4:50). Competitors faced a stiffish breeze in the early stages, and shelter was only reached when the field turned south, after the 2M point. The leading quintet, mainly led by McCole or Reid were still together at halfway (25:44), before Kirkland and then Scott lost contact. Coming back onto the main road at 7M, McCole and Reid had dropped Care, with Reid making the first significent bid for victory, a mile later. However, the move was covered by McCole, whose track experience told as he eased passed his rival with 300m remaining. The margin of victory at the finish at the Sands Centre was 3secs. Another 800m specialist, Jonathan Powell of Durham finished strongly to take third place overhauling Care in the final mile. Powell, over 100m behind the leading group at halfway, arguably covered the second half of the race, quicker than the winner. Ian Harding of Morpeth was another strong finisher in 5th with 2005 winner, Scott taking 6th place, but he had the consolation of winning the first veterans' prize. Liverpool took the team title ahead of Morpeth, with Durham taking the veterans' awards.
Another Merseyside athlete, Gillian Laithwaite (St Helens) in the Over 35 category, comfortably won the Womens' race finishing in 49th position overall. Judith Nutt was 2secs outside her personal best in second place. Clydesdale took both the Open and Veterans' team titles.

Additional Comments:  Only results sent due to time lapse. High Jump results courtesy of Angus Lumb. Good entry for High Jump as it continued an hour after final track event. Pole Vault started 1.5hrs before track events, which lasted just over an hour. Very poor turnn-out in Male U15 age-group.  Personally I thought Laura Welsh won both her events, though I agreed with judges that Rebecca Pottinger won U20 Hurdles. Apologies for any name mis-spelling, but some writing not very clear.

Heaton Harriers Memorial Road Races.
Exhibition Park/Town Moor.  Sun. 12th Nov.
Sunderland Harrier Mark Hood won yesterday's Heaton Harriers Town Moor Memorial 10km Road Race, held around the grounds of the Newcastle Exhibition Park and Town Moor. In so doing he won a £50 bonus for breaking his own course record set in 2003. In ideal conditions, Hood pulled away from the leading group after 2km, covering a break by Martin Scaife. However, the Morpeth Harrier dropped out at 4km, leaving Hood with a lead of 9secs at halfway (15:12), over the chasing group of Lewis Timmins of Gosforth, Mark Brown of Morpeth and Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly. Hood extended his advantage to 12 secs at the finish line, clipping 5secs off the old figures. The performance was all the more creditable as the path on part of the course was in the process of being relaid, and competitors were running on mud rather than tarmac.Timmins, making his debut over the distance, finished in a creditable 2nd place. Brown crossed the line in third, despite struggling with injury problems in the final 100m. Unattached athlete, Mark Smith was the leading veteran in 12th position. Elswick were succesful in the team event.
Angela Hunter of Chester Le Street comfortably won the Womens' race. Hunter, winner in 2003 and second in 2004 and 2005, came home 40secs ahead of the in-form Sunderland Stroller, Kristina Slater, who was also the leading veteran. Slater also led her club to the team title. 2005 winner, Kate Chapman of Morpeth finished 3rd.
Records also were broken in the Junior Womens' race, when winner Claire Baudouin and runner-up Lydia Patton, both of Gateshead, set new figures in the Under 17 and Under 20 age-groups, respectively.
Hannah Rank of Morpeth took 6secs off the old figures in the Under 13 Girls' race.
Zoe Armstrong of Morpeth repeated her 2005 victory in the Under 15 Girls' event.
Robert Balmbra of Morpeth, successful in the Under 17 race, last year, moved up an age-group to win the Under 20 event. Middlesbrough's Adam Morrell won the Under 17 section.
Alistair Douglass of Morpeth and Lewis Hogg of Gateshead, won the Under 15 and Under 13 races, respectively.
The inaugural Under 11 races, attracted large fields, with Kieron Newton of Gateshead and Amy Etherington of Shildon, coming home in first place.

Additional Comments:  Most of info used. Weather dry, bright and only light wind (day before was wet and windy). Major problems with deluge of late entries and processing of results (especially U20/U17 race, where there was excellent turn-out of 19 Men and 20 Women). Will not comment any further on this. Also major backbround problems in days leading up to event, when the council decided to bring forward, the re-surfacing of the Moor and Park paths, due to the "good" weather. However, this was not as bad a problem ,as anticipated. 334 finishers in Senior race (234 + 100). Ted Joynson was slowest (1:37:11), after starting about 35mins before main field.  Only poor fields were at U15 level (probably to do wth Schools Cup, the day before). 58 finishers (25 + 33) in inaugural U11 event (slightly over 1km). Morpeth did not close in team in Senior event. Jon Taylor was a non-counter and Archie Jenkins dropped out. Martin Scaife was wearing a NYM vest. Good quality in M55 and M70 categories. Natalie Miller was not included in original U20W results (not for first time this season), though she was alongside Steph Crowell, coming back nto park. (since found to be 9th in 21:52). Other personality performances included: 259 D Whitmore 51:37; 330 D Tait 67:25

Blackhill Bounders Fruit Bowl Friends of Gibside Trail Race.
Gibside Estate, Rowlands Gill.  Sun. 5th Nov.
Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street won yesterday's 10th Friends of Gibside Fruit Bowl Trail Race, for the third successive year, making this his 5th victory in the event. Bell soon headed the 470-strong field along with Ian Twaddle of North Shields Poly and Carl Mustill of Newton Aycliffe. Astill soon lost contact as Bell and Twaddle were locked together until the final km, when Bell kicked away to a 12secs victory. Veteran Mark Smith finished strongly to take third place. Darlington's Susie Rutherford making her debut in this event, comfortably won the Womens' race, finishing in 30th position overall. After a cautious start, Rutherford moved through the field to gain a 55secs victory over early leader Sonia Morley. The latter was also the leading veteran. Third place went to another veteran, Fiona Shenton of Elvet Striders.

Additional Comments:  Report edited. Weather I understand, was dry and bright. Results courtesy of Bill McGuirk and NoEAA website. Had to curb depth of results, due to them not appearing on website until pm Sunday. Due to chip timing times given were in 1/100ths, which is contrary to ECCU rules. Have rounded up either up or down. Also no fastest times listed and results of incomplete (or disqualified) teams, not given.
Also no names provided for a lot of teams (including JM Morpeth - these courtesy of George Patterson).
